If you have a VIN, you are already in the BIW phase. So the VIN won't change.

I'm still waiting for my VIN and now don't want it until 2013 (given there's no chance that I'm getting it delivered this year). I'd be very angry if I get a 2012 car, but can't finish the process and be able to claim it on my 2012 taxes. If I'm taking delivery in 2013, I want a 2013 car.

Assignment of a ViN triggers Tesla's ability to ask for payment.... Normally, a Delivery Specialist (DS) will get a hold of you quickly to let you know you have a ViN and to get you your Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement (MVPA) at which time most have been paying for the car. It's a revenue marker for Tesla so they tend to be pro-active.

Thanks - looks like they'll miss my 12/15 - 12/31 delivery date then, which does suck. I put down a Signature deposit in Oct. 2011, then switched that to a regular production in June, so the wait bites hard! Congrats to all who got theirs though - i'm sure eventually i'll be back to driving around electrically - i miss the MINI E experience!

I am 2747... picking up at the factory this afternoon. 85KW, air suspension, black, leather, paint armor and standard audio. Both excited and nervous, regarding building quality, as they are clearly ramping production at year's end.

Thanks to all the members that have answered my questions along the way.

That's all very reasonable of you; however, you went through the financial gymnastics BECAUSE they told you you'd have everything by Dec/Jan. I certainly went through a lot I wouldn't have gone through otherwise, and now I have a bank staring at me (metaphorically) waiting on a VIN with the clock a-ticking away. Sigh.

i am in pretty much the same situation as you, and my DS said that while they won't make the Dec 31 deadline, it should be early to mid January. we will NOT be thrown back just because we didn't get in before the 31st.

I got through to my DS today, and he assured me that missing the 12/31 deadline would not push me any further back. I'm now under the impression that anybody who was given a 12/15-12/31 delivery window will be at the front of the line going forward. My sense is that this means 60kWh battery packs won't begin production until mid/late January, after the 85kWh cars for those who opted for an attempted 2012 delivery have been completed.

If I were a reservation holder anywhere under 5000 and I had finalized my 60kWh config months ago, I'd be pretty annoyed by that, but hopefully all will be forgotten once their cars are delivered.

Got my VIN yesterday: 3223. Signed the finalized paperwork this evening, but not in time to wire payment before the bank closed. Hopefully the wire goes through Monday without a hitch and I can close the purchase in the last hours of 2012. No firm delivery date, but given an estimate of 2 weeks to finish up on the line and make the long trek cross country.

Got my vin today 3231 P 9,045 Grey with grey interior, pano roof, air suspension, gloss one he, 21" wheels, twin chargers, tech package. Traveling today and tomorrow so will finalize paperwork on Monday! The New Year is starting off with a Model S!
