What new options would make you trade-up and get a new Tesla?

Most of my nits can be remedied with software updates (like the aforementioned USB shuffle ).

The only thing I would trade my P85+ in for RIGHT NOW would be a bigger battery and/or faster charging capability.

And, depending on how the car does during its first winter in a few months, maybe AWD.

I wouldn't change a thing and love my P85, but it would become my wife's car if some of the following happened:

500 HP, AWD, Verizon LTE vs AT&T G3, Carbon Fiber body vs aluminum, folding hardtop, lighter battery with higher Amperage, Weight reduction to under 3000 lbs, charging port on both sides of car, expanded SuperCharging to the East Coast.

It must be great to live in California, but the Mid Atlantic is a desert, when it comes to SCing - can't get to the Greenbrier Hotel from Wash DC/NVA to (White Sulphur Springs WV), The OMNI Homestead Resort (Hot Springs VA), can't get to the Beach (Ocean City, Bethany Beach, Rehoboth etc) cant go the Virginia Tech (Blacksburg) with out creative strategies involving campgrounds and grumpy proprietors who don't understand the Tesla and do not pricing plans that make sense. (I can charge you $50 for a 50 AMP RV spot that will trip every 30 minutes - while you hang out in my nasty lobby)

Bigger impact that would get me to buy another one would be to get real leadership in politics that institutes the following:

Tax Incentives for cars made in the USA.

Laws that incentivize commercial businesses to install 100AMP service at their parking garage - or at a minimum that they can't block a request ( I offered to pay for the install at my office and got no takers)

No sales tax - 3.02% of value of car in Virginia - $4000 for a loaded Tesla
No property tax - Virginia charges $4.57 for $100 in value plus an annual $38 admin fee ($5100 for a loaded Tesla) - paid annually!!!!
No road tax (Virginia charges $65 per year)
No tax on special HOV plates (Virginia charges $25 per year)
no toll road tax (HOT Lanes should be free for non emission vehicles)
no parking fees - varies
no registration fees.- $45.75 per year in Virginia
No inspection fees - $16.00 per year in Virginia
FAST Toll / Smart Tag fees - $25 per year plus fees

Just shy of $10,000 in taxes in the first year of ownership!

First politician that fixes this gets my vote and my Political Action Commitee dollars/ Support. Dem/Republican/Socialist/Tea Party - I don't care - just provide leadership

That is totally whacked!! Actually makes our taxes in California look pretty reasonable. Maybe consider moving across the state line to Maryland...

I don't yet have a Tesla. For me to spend mega-bucks on a car, it needs to have AWD. (The CA authorities make 2WD cars install snow chains whether they truly need them or not.)

A P-Minus MS?

Since mine was built in June 2013, bumper beepers, power-retract mirrors, and (maybe) better front seats have happened. And I want them.

I'd like real hill hold and overhead grab handles. Repositioning that B-pillar a few inches rearward would make a new MS a priority.

A 400 hp motor with inverter to match is just extra weight to haul around; if they offered a P-minus model with 1/3 less peak acceleration, I'd opt for it. Ditto a 125 kWh battery.

Very noble of you but also not very good for the environment. Your logic only makes sense if your used tesla is scrapped after you sell it. Buying a new tesla means someone else will buy your used one and likely trash their gas powered one. Thus by selling your tesla and upgrading one day you'd actually help the environment!
Good point!

BTW, as much as I love our MS, I'll upgrade in a heartbeat when the self-driving option is offered. Otherwise, I'll wait for the GenIII and hope that it will come as a self-driving car.

A different but related question is what would make people who haven't yet bought a Model S buy one?

Great question, I have a friend who is interested in a Model S, budget dictates he should get a 60, but he wants an 85. He's comparing it to Lexus GS-F sport, and other similar cars. He hasn't yet driven a Tesla, I told him to just drive one and he'll understand, plus the dollars aren't far apart from GS-F vs 60 from a monthly payment standpoint once you factor in the gas savings.

Do you have any other recommendations?

AWD Model S with 3 second 0-60.

Haha that would be reminiscent of WRX's with better creature comforts. Would be a great addition to the current selections.

In order of importance:

1. Front mounted Camera system (front parking sensors are all but useless most of the time). This is my number one disappointment.
2. Auto Pilot system
3. AWD. Would only get me to buy if combined with a front camera.
4. Better interior materials, more plush inside.

2 things:
* The ability to drive the car harder longer and do at least 20 laps on a 2-3 mile road course. I find it hard to get attached to cars that I can't use at the track even if they are not my main track car. I instruct and often drive my comfortable street car to the track and give student rides during open sessions. This has always been possible with my street BMWs but its not with the Tesla P85+. If a new Model S had the ability to be useable like an M3 or M5 on the track I would trade up immediately.
* Longer range (so I could flog it non-stop and go to the track)

There are lots of other desired improvements (seats, audio, storage pockets, interior lighting) but I would retro-fit those on my current P85+ if they came out.

More range would be a big factor. But that only requires a new battery, not an entire new car.

For me to buy a new car it would have to have 'smart' features. Mostly active safety features. The technology is there to have a self driving car which means there are sensors and image recognition that can interpret the environment and other vehicles so well that it can drive itself safely. Currently our cars are really dumb.

I never thought of that - optional AC in the frunk is a great idea. But love the car as is, and would buy a second one (already waiting for an X) instead of trading up.

To make me want to upgrade my P85? Lets see, All wheel drive, 12 way adjustable drivers seat, at least 4G or above internet speed. Air conditioning vent in the Frunk as an option for keeping groceries cool in a hot climate. longer range battery option.
That's about it.. Barring some unforseen flaw, I don't know why I would change out this car like I used to do... Great Vehicle!

I didn't know some people had an issue with the seats. Hubby took his sixty from NJ to NC and back as a solo driver and said he was VERY comfortable. As a side note, we have logged 35,000 miles in 14 months, so have spent lots and lots of time in the car and never have felt that the seats were uncomfortable.

Elon said they are developing new seats for the Model S, and that existing cars we be able to be retrofitted. I am fine with the seats the way they are, but have yet to do a long-distance drive.
