Actually, having a supercharger near LAX is great for people from Santa Barbara, San Diego, Palm Springs, etc, who often drive to LAX to fly out or pick up visitors. We use it a lot. Even if the design center wasn't there, I wouldn't have been surprised if they eventually would have put one somewhere near.

But that's just because superchargers like Oxnard and San Juan Capistrano didn't exist. Those locations around the edge of the big city make much more sense.

Obviously differing opinions, which is ok. I personally think Hawthorne is a good location as it is accessible to so many people. Any location that helps lots of people get more use of their tesla would seem to be a good location. Of particular value are "destination cities" such as LA. On the Aus East coast theses would be SYDNEY, MELBOURNE, CANberra and then places like Kingscliff, Gold Coast, Noosa.

In fact, Gold Coast would be perfect location for QLD service Center and a Supercharger as it could also help service northern NSW. Since NSW would seem to be headed towards having the highest number of Teslas this may make a lot of sense to consider.

Sorry, I still disagree. From my home in San Diego, I can easily get to Hawthorne on a normal (85%) charge, then charge for half an hour while waiting for my friends' plane to land. Then make it back to San Diego, all without having to think about going slow or anything. Also when visiting friends further north in the LA area, this still works well, giving us a nearly full charge for the weekend running around. But SJC just isn't terribly helpful in this scenario; the car is still nearly full on the way up, and the worst of the traffic is still ahead of us (so we don't know how much time will be needed to meet the plane). And waiting until we get back to SJC on the way south often means having to worry about speed and/or traffic drains on the battery.

Don't take me wrong, I agree that in almost all cases the satellite superchargers are better. But having one that close to LAX is still really helpful.

OK, fair enough. Of course I'm sure they'd be happy in Australia to have A)some cars and B)any superchargers at all. I sure miss my Model S whenever I'm in Melbourne.

I've just noticed that the Tesla careers site has a few jobs listed for Melbourne - Parts Advisor, Service Advisor, and Service Concierge. You can find these by looking at http://www.teslamotors.com/careers and searching for 'Melbourne'. I don't know if these are new or stale listings, but I haven't heard anyone mention them before. A tiny sign of progress perhaps?

I think these are new job listings. Good spot!

In other news I'm reading an AMA on reddit by Jeff Chamberlain, who says that lithium ion batteries will improve by 2.5-3 times in the coming years and be up to 60% cheaper. That hopefully means we'll get cars with better range and they will be cheaper.

Can you imagine a Model S getting over 1000km of range and be cheaper as well? Amazing.

I think over 600km range is completely pointless. It would be better to reduce the battery cost, mass and volume and thereby improve the efficiency.

I was told by a little birdie that a site for the Sydney service centre has been chosen and it was an old vehicle facility. They just need to sign the lease and not a great deal needs to be done to it to get it "Teslarised". A crew is on standby to move in and get the work done. However, the birdie was not singing about which side of the bridge we are talking. Got a sudden severe case of laryngitis at that point!!
The lease signing was " imminent". This was just yesterday.

I just found this one as well at http://australia.recruit.net/company-tesla-jobs

Perhaps in the US where Superchargers are already the norm. But here in Australia, where Tesla might be less willing to invest as heavily in supercharger infrastructure, a bigger range, ie over 1000km, would go a long way to appeasing the majority of the population. It would allow for a Melbourne to Sydney trip on one charge. Perhaps it can be an option.

Re: site - good one Dborn! Hope that little bird gets a throat lozenge :D

They have been there for months, including jobs for other centres.
I also posted a while back of almost a dozen jobs on seek.com.au. Then they disappear and were replaced by one vacancy for a recruiter. Now there are three advertised on the same site, as of 7th Sept. All three jobs are in Sydney.

It was four months ago, back in May. Here's my post (26/05/14).....

Sorry about the terrible long link in my previous post. I guess being a newby you can't edit it either.

This might be more helpful..

SEEK - Australias no. 1 jobs, employment, career and recruitment site

The positions advertised are:
Delivery Experience Specialist
Regional Delivery Manager
Electric Vehicle Charging Specialist
Service Concierge / Service Receptionist
Senior Automotive Vehicle Technician
Automotive Parts Advisor
Vehicle Detailer
Automotive Service Advisor
Workshop Foreman

I'm not local so I don't know what representation already exists, but I would say that the positions on Seek are a promising sign that Tesla are setting up a full-time permanent operation in Sydney.

Here's a link to what's currently on the Tesla company website for positions available in Australian.

One would imagine that if they had any plans to open in QLD Anytime soon that we'd start to see some job listings as well. Anyone have an idea of how far in advance they start recruiting process? Presumably it could be shorter than it was for Sydney as they can leverage some of the existing folks for planning, etc.
