I agree with @calisnow its going to most likely be Tesla Vision/AP 2.0 and the refinement is in the demonstration of the product in action. However, I dont think its fully autonomous, I think its a more advanced version of what we have now but not fully autonomous. The announcement should include a demonstration not unlike the announcement of Autopilot.

So I guess that would make AP2 "unexpected" then? ;) lol
Before I bought my MS and took delivery, I spent hours reading all these posts. Now that my sled is a real thing and sitting in my garage, I find my interest in these conversations dwindling. Why speculate on AP2 when what I have is find, and a future release won't change my behavior/investment?

My wife called me a Teslaholic for all the time spent here, but now she has me back.

The delays seems to make sense for Tesla Vision / AP2.0.

The faster they eliminate Mobileye from their suppliers, the better.

They need a few more days of refinement as the squadron of mules with TV/AP2 hardware are driving around doing deep learning AI.

I wouldn't be surprised if TV will increase in price say 1/1/2017 in order to get some more q4 orders.
Crap - I was delaying picking up my September built car for Tuesday after Tesla monday announcement. And now, Tesla delays to Wed. Will try and delay till Thu now if I could!

I just now finally got caught up on this thread and while I WAS previously thinking that this was a brand new product that none of us are thinking about that Elon came up with (think of something along the lines of the automated charging snake). BUT the fact this event was delayed right after Germany filed suit against Tesla to stop advertising the Autopilot feature seems like it would be a crazy coincidence if it was not the driving factor for the delay.
My guess is that the legal team is working out a way to rename this new version of AP to something else. I also believe that it will not be Lvl 4 autonomy that we are all clamoring for but something closer to Level 3+ or a longer distance summon.

Tesla posted a mini announcement in their blog today ...
Tesla and Panasonic to Collaborate on Photovoltaic Cell and Module Production in Buffalo, New York

Tesla and Panasonic to Collaborate on Photovoltaic Cell and Module Production in Buffalo, New York
The Tesla Team October 16, 2016
Tesla and Panasonic have entered into a non-binding letter of intent under which they will begin collaborating on the manufacturing and production of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules in Buffalo, New York. Under this agreement, which is contingent upon shareholders' approval of Tesla’s acquisition of SolarCity, Tesla will use the cells and modules in a solar energy system that will work seamlessly with Powerwall and Powerpack, Tesla’s energy storage products. With the aid of installation, sales and financing capabilities from SolarCity, Tesla will bring an integrated sustainable energy solution to residential, commercial, and grid-scale customers.

The parties intend for Panasonic to begin PV cell and module production at the Buffalo facility in 2017. Tesla intends to provide a long-term purchase commitment for those cells from Panasonic. The collaboration extends the established relationship between Tesla and Panasonic, which includes the production of electric vehicle and grid storage battery cells at Tesla’s Gigafactory.

JB Straubel, Chief Technical Officer and Co-founder of Tesla, said “We are excited to expand our partnership with Panasonic as we move towards a combined Tesla and SolarCity. By working together on solar, we will be able to accelerate production of high-efficiency, extremely reliable solar cells and modules at the best cost.”

Shuuji Okayama, Vice-president, Eco Solutions Company of Panasonic, added, “Panasonic PV cells and modules boast industry-leading power generation performance, and achieve high quality and reliability. We expect that the collaboration talks will lead to growth of the Tesla and Panasonic relationship.” The continued partnership between Tesla and Panasonic is an important step in creating fully-integrated energy products for businesses, home owners and utilities, and furthers Tesla’s mission toward a sustainable energy future.

Panasonic is also a leading manufacturer, and a 20-year-old pioneer, of electrical mid-engines for bicycles.
E-Bike Systems | Panasonic Automotive & Industrial Systems Company Europe

Alhough their range lags behind Bosch and Shimano last-gens, nothing too drastic to fix with world-class engineers and superb manufacturing tools.
Not to mention the ease of marketing to Tesla car owners.

A bit like Porsche when launching the Cayenne project : "What else do our super-satisfied-over-addicted 911 owners have in their garage ? An SUV from BMW, Mercedes or Lexus. Darn, talk about the obvious..."

I bet most Tesla owners, be it Roadster, S or X, gosh even (or especially ?) Model 3, would put down a deposit for a piece or two ASAP if Elon announced it wednesday.

Quick data on e-bikes trends worldwide (Q2/2016): Electric Bicycles

This would certainly be fun:

Tesla: We have a thing called Autopilot.
Germany: You can't call it that.
Tesla: Why not?
Germany: It's not fully autonomous.
Tesla: Surprise!

From a technical standpoint it seems unlikely that anyone can deliver this year, even Tesla - we've been assuming that once Tesla releases autonomous capable hardware it'll be at least a year before they get it all sorted out and approved by regulators.

But this would be awesome if they can pull it off. :)

I just find it odd that it would require 2 more days to refine something that has probably been in development for a long time, unless it's some cool Autopilot demo that isn't working right yet, which seems risky to me to show if there is potential for failure. Therefore, I put less weight in the Autopilot 8 (but of course who just knows... it's all conjecture and I've never bee right).
