Touché. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Indeed. It's no Tesla, that's for sure, but the LEAF really is fun to drive & other owners are generally friendly & happy to be among those who have taken early steps on the EV path. Keep in mind, one of the great beauties is XX,000 miles / Zero gasoline. To me, that little difference is beautiful, and very nearly priceless. ML
btw it's my wife's car! I drive a dodge truck that actually IS "hideous"!!

Yeah don't be bad mouthing the Leaf, it is a wonderful car and looks great in the garage charging next to our Models... :)View attachment 18328
Uh, TurboFroggy; My first EV was a white Ford Ranger PU. In Jan 2011, I got a black Nissan LEAF (22k mi), got a green 85kWh Model S due for delivery in May; Got 6 kW solar on the roof; I'm certainly not gonna bad-mouth. But, do I have a long lost twin?

Please don't mention the good looks of the Leaf and Model S in the same sentence!

As far as the Thumbs Down given by the other driver I think this is left over anger from the OCCUPY MOVEMENT of last year. My Dad's first comment when I told him that I'd purchased a Model S was, "I hope you don't get labeled as 1%'er and have some a-hole key your car!"

Right or wrong, you've been labeled a 1%'er and you are public enemy #1 in this pinhead's eyes.

I actually worry about a, b, c, and d's scratching or damaging my car.

I have zero range anxiety but a fair amount of rage anxiety about left, right, or independent nutjobs that burn SUV's (my Tahoe) and key "GAs4eVr" into EV's (my Tesla) for fun. I can't win either way depending on what I drive.

Kind of wish the battery was hooked up to the aluminum in a soft of electric fence kind of way . . .

Ditto. I worry about this constantly too... Especially on road trips parking my car overnight or unattended for long periods in new places... Haters gonna hate. For the record being a Libertarian, I don't agree with any gov loans or special tax subsidies.. For any company or any industry. But at least Tesla paid theirs back with interest (one of the few) and since I see the IRS as nearly the root of all evil (The Federal Reserve) I bought one so I could get the rebate and pay less income tax to those bastards. I'd love to put a small "Molon Labe" sticker somewhere on the car too, but would be afraid the left wing nuts would key me up for supporting the 2nd Amendment just as much as I fear the Neocons for keying me up for thinking I'm a wanna be socialist progressive type. Can't win, but at the same time I'm proud to be driving a car that is cutting edge technology breaking new ground and most importantly AMERICAN. This company is trying to make a difference and break us out of the oil dependence and into something more sustainable and more clean for the environment over the long haul. And I tip my hat to elon for that... Especially combining this technology with home batteries and solar

I do think we have to keep an open mind about gestures that appear to be anti-Tesla, especially when we're on the road with our $100K plus cars. We appear to be a very privileged lot and in a world where many people are struggling it's not surprising that there would be some resentment.

This. Most people can't afford these machines. And for good reason their purchasing power is being destroyed by a private bank that answers to no one and their jobs are being offshored by fancy trade agreements. They see us as part of the 1% that is getting wealthier while they get more poor.

As a gun-owning left wing nut, I'm confident no one would mess with your car for "supporting the 2nd Amendment". Personally, I would just laugh at the ridiculousness of someone thinking the "Obama's comin' for yer guns" marketing scheme is anywhere near reality.

More on-topic, assuming I don't end up in snippiness, I do worry about the people who consider the Model S a 1%'er car. I make like 70k a year (and by any reasonable measure, can't afford this car), but that wasn't going to stop me. I'm less worried about the "right-wing anti-ev" crowd if there really is such a thing. I've thought about putting some liberal stickers on my car to maybe quell some of the "rich-hate", but then (since I live in the South for the time being) I'm certain my car would get damaged by one of the local Tea Party groups that spends their weekends holding racist signs and American flags on the side of the road. I guess we can't win.

Most negative experience I've had so far was on a Friday night, parked in Boston near Copley square. Some guy in his early twenties (obviously drunk), no shirt, walks by our car with his friends, doesn't think anyone is in the car and purposely punches the car as he walks by and says "f---ing tesla". I rolled down the window to prevent him from doing further damage and he starts yelling " stay in your car, man!" Then yells to his friends so the whole block can hear: "This guy in the the Tesla wants to fight me!!" , he swears at me some more as he walks away backwards down the middle of the street and eventually joins his other friends when he sees I'm not coming out.

It's amusing to me now when I realize he couldn't see into the car because it was dark out and didn't realize I'm a girl, but terrifying because drunk twenty something guys with violent tendencies are pretty much my worst nightmare. I actually had a mini anxiety attack from the stress. About 10 minutes later a guy pulled up in a beat up car, stopped in the middle of the street and gave me a huge thumbs up and big smile. Really cheered me up!

........which is why I got a license plate frame that clearly says "Made in the USA"

Unfortunately, I don't think that would offset rage caused by something like a "Eat the rich" sticker. I suppose I could put an "Obama, go back to Kenya!" sticker on the other side and hope people only notice the side I want them to. Why can't these hypothetical people just leave my car alone?!
