Luckily, the hand is so bad that even the attempt at a PR campaign is laughable. However, let's not overestimate the Consumers' intelligence. Some will go for this.

And, let's not underestimate a) the pile of cash that NADA and their allies (e.g., the Kochs and their front organizations) are willing to throw at this, and b) the greed and stupidity of the various legislators they can buy.
 
+100 on doing a parity. And don't forget that pretty cartoon woman walking into the dealership and having all the car salesMEN tell her what to buy. I will never forget the Buick guy who told me "list sticker price" was a good deal and when my jaw dropped he told me to go home and ask my boyfriend if I didn't believe him.
I bought the 96 Buick I wanted from the only woman salesperson I could find in the area. Even when I bought my Prius last year, I asked for a female salesperson and in the 3 dealerships I spoke to, the answer was that they don't have any. All had female receptionists though. Yeah that's an industry I want to support...
Women are generally too smart to be car salespeople.
 
Yes, dealers certainly do compete fiercely. Over who can do the best job of screwing the consumer.

I've said it before; If I hadn't served in combat a few of my car buying experiences would rank at the top of my most traumatic life events. I've been working on my "compassionate self" for a long time. One of the hardest things to let go of and look at from a different (re: compassionate) perspective is my hatred for car dealers. I hope to never have to experience a dealership again.
 
The part that drives me the most nuts is about how they drive recalls. This is wrong on so many levels. It starts with manufactures issuing recalls, not the dealers. If you try to go to a dealership with any repair not covered under warranty/recall, they will not do any free work at all. Even if there is a question about the warranty repair were the manufacturer won't cover it, the dealership will deny warranty! In the case of the GM ignition recall, the part itself was cheap. But once you added the overhead of dealership labor and profit, costs skyrocketed. One could even then say dealerships are the ones at fault for making recalls so expensive and delayed. If manufactures could have recalls performed at no profit for the dealership (like they would be if they owned the service centers themselves), they would probably be much more likely to get them issued sooner as the numbers work more in their favor.

Once the recall is issued, dealerships do nothing to help promote the recall work from being performed. They simply do it when the car is brought in by the customer. Even the recall notices that go out are not covered by the dealer but by the manufacturer!
 
Dealerships have been great and the gold standard for so many years in the USA. But times have changed. Car companies that mass produce autos that overstock their sale yards are stupid and passe. If one wants to buy a Tesla the cost is fixed and there is no concern over whether the dealer screwed you or you got a great deal. You pay for what you want. I have bought five cars from a local dealer over the years that has given me fair deals only because he is personal friend and I have given him a lot business which really has amounted to huge service bills over the years. I just spent $3,400 on major service on my eight year old GTI which is only worth about $9.000. That was my wakeup call. I have only Apple computers, all of which were purchased direct from the company. Tesla has produced a very expensive rocket ship/car that is ten years ahead of the game. Tesla is playing the right game now. They are proactive with problems, updates, and "recalls." I just hope they will maintain this attitude. I have never personally purchased any stocks aside from my retirement account that is managed by others. My big mistake...
 
I don't mind dealerships. Some people may have good experiences with them. Some people may also fall for the stuff they are saying in the video.
What I cannot understand though is the lack of choice. This distribution model should not be mandatory. If people want to buy direct they should be allowed to. If car manufacturers don't want to use dealers they should be allowed too.

This one really grinds my gears. Women and minorities are consistently offered higher prices and more unnecessary repairs at dealerships.

This is not anecdotal. This is scholarly research where they control for the amount of knowledge the consumer has. Yet another reason to hate them.
 
It seems NADA is trying to aim for Tesla in their home turf, seems like a bunch of articles in California papers that are spreading NADA's nonsense.

They seem to be getting more and more desperate, but funny enough they are terrible at advertising and social media. I mean a 5 year old could do a better job advertising their message.

Not so at Subaru dealers. The process I underwent there was so simple that Tesla could not have done it any better in Tesla Stores that actually perform sales. The exception that proves the rule?

I disagree. We purchased a Forester (before the ModS) and were victims of this system - lies, bait and switch, overcharging, good-cop-bad-cop, the whole 9 yards. This experience just underscored my bubbling hatred of the stealership system and made the decision to just go ahead and get the ModS much easier.
 
A classic case of making your bed and now having to lie in it.
Very few people enjoy the car buying experience.
Every car dealer now has to have an Internet specialist because so many are trying to do all they can online to minimize the time actually spent at the Dealer.
Big contrast to the Tesla model where one has to wait weeks just to step a foot in the door to get a test drive.
 
i have never understood the idea of cost negotiating for vehicles - why does it exist ? do you talk the price down on your coffee when you buy one at the local coffee shop - or the pair of shoes from whereever ? a product should cost x regardless of what store you buy it from .. asinine

So you bought a new Forester (year?) from a Subaru dealer (where?) at the price they were asking (or average for the region) and ran into all this? NJ is not exactly snow country but my experience is limited to 4 Subaru dealerships in the Rocky Mts and two north of Albany NY which are areas where Foresters sell themselves and maintain value. Hence the low key treatment that I've experienced. Perhaps a new thread re pitfalls to avoid when using dealers etc. I'm curious how I avoided any and all of this.

I have hated going to the Nissan and Lexus dealerships. I wanted to get the BMW i3 and they were nice, but would not deal on the car (I have been a part of the system). I found a different dealership that gave me a much better price (thousands less) right off, and would have gone there but I could not get over the test drive where, unfortunately, the i3 ran out of energy though it said it had 63 miles left on it. It was some glitch and it is a great car (with limited milage for me) and got me to figure out that the Model S is what I wanted.

But, the thread is about dealerships. CarMax (I almost bought a used Leaf on my journey to purchasing the MS) was very pleasant and no dealing is their style also.

I greatly enjoyed my visit to the store and test drive in Natick/Boston (there are no stores near me, I was on a trip to Boston and made arrangements). I had arranged the test drive in advance to coincide with the trip, so there didn't seem to be any waiting for me...

first Forester: 1999 (doesn't count), second: bought in 2013 (2014 model year).

New Jersey; drove to three different stealerships, including the one we've been bringing Senior (the first Forester - and yeah, we call the second one Junior) to for service, after the one we bought it at shut down. (so much for dealers being there to support you while a manufacturer can simply close its doors). Every time I see one of those NADA screeds I can't help getting angrier about being a victim of each and every one of their lies.

Yup. Par for the course.

They keep value here as well (keep in mind that my feelings about that have changed some since getting my ModS).
