I went with my friend today as he picked up his
gorgeous Pearl White Signature Performance Model S, with silver 21" wheels, pano roof, and white leather interior with CF trim. What a stunner! I don't know his sequence number and I didn't ask his permission to post his VIN, but he's between 450 and 500.
The factory tour was
awesome!! Although it was 1:30pm on a Saturday, the factory was very definitely in operation. We were able to see body panels being stamped on the massive Schuler press, and the robotic lines welding body frames together. Workers from the seating contractor were in their leased area building seats, and there were Tesla crews working on interiors. The plastics section was producing parts, and we saw people doing finish quality inspections on painted front bumper/fascia parts. The dyno was running and cars were on the bamboo floor in the final inspection section.
I saw one part with a tag on it for VIN 950-something -- that was the highest number I saw. There were dozens of cars in late stages of production, on their wheels and either having final items completed or getting inspections done. I couldn't get close enough to see VINs on them, although there were a few cars with little cones on top showing their VINs, and they were in the upper 700's.
I don't doubt that I saw parts of my car in the stamping shop, as there were definitely hundreds of cars worth of stamped aluminum waiting for assembly, neatly arrayed on racks.
Fit & finish on my friend's car was outstanding. My concerns about choosing white are over. He did have the "chin" cubby below the 17" screen, but did not receive the parcel shelf. We found one area of soft trim near one of the windows that was a little loose, and the Delivery Specialist flagged it for correction during the first service call (we didn't want to delay things).
Overall, it was an absolutely awesome day. I got goosebumps seeing these gorgeous cars being built. I can hardly wait to receive mine.
