While you're probably correct on it being a contract of sorts, there's likely some fine print in there about Tesla reserving the right to make modifications with your remedy being if you don't like it they'll give you your deposit back and let you out of it...

Surprisingly, no the Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement, does not provide for that. Actually, it's actually very nice towards the buyer. It makes no mention of any way for Tesla to cancel or change the configuration of an order. It does provide for the buyer to modify the order and for the price to subsequently be adjusted. There is the section on liability limits but it only limits incidental, special or consequential damages, none of which are relevant in this case.
