Tracking P85D delivery thread

I just got off the phone with the Fremont delivery center. They confirmed NO P85D has been delivered yet, they're all being held up for inspection.
My P85D is in the early stages of inspection, which they said can take 1 to 2 weeks "for the initial batch of P85Ds", whatever that means...

To clear up - that thread was about the Sub-zero option - not standard on the P85D. (raised my hand as the original poster of that communication from my DS). The "surprise" I'm not yet sure about. Hopefully headed over to the sales office today to test drive our new P85D demo that arrived yesterday.

A user in another thread mentioned yesterday that 1) heated steering wheel is most likely standard to P85D; and 2) we may all be in for a surprize.

What if the delay in not about _problems_, but about a new upgrade/new features?

Please do report back on all new features!

its already been one to two weeks.

For some P85Ds that have started production on 11/21, that's true. For others, like mine - which entered production on 11/25 - it's only been a day in quality checks.
Of course, we don't really know how long "true" production (body-in-white, paint, initial assembly, final assembly etc.) takes versus the inspection phases since My Tesla shows "in production" for all the aforementioned stages.
Which is why I've been inquiring with my DS and the delivery center at Fremont (or inside delivery team at HQ) what exact stage of production my P85D is in.

I just talked to my DS. The conference call happens region-by-region, and happens every Tuesday. Each region has its own time for the call. Ours here in MN is at 4:00pm. My DS is not expecting any revelations since most updates come via email. Still saying that there is nothing major going on, just that the EOL inspections are running behind. I am sure they are finding and fixing bugs (my words, not his). We have a TON of PDs coming here!

I don't want to talk to her about the car, because she doesn't know that I'm buying a Tesla for her yet. But I know that she loves the car, because I've been taking her to car shows to secretly find out what she likes (Model S was her favorite, beating out the BMW i8). Also it's a bit too late to change my order now.

She sat in my Lamborghinis countless times before, so I think she's okay with the performance. She's driven my other sports cars just fine, too. I just tell her to not step on the gas pedal too hard if she doesn't want to go fast. Her only complaints with the Lambos are that they're too loud, have no trunk space, have no back seats, eat too much gas, and that they get too much attention. So this car is perfect for her (she liked my Bentley CGT, too, but that thing's also a gas guzzler).

As for being uncomfortable with the cost of the car... yea, that's why she likes cheap beater cars. But I think life's too short to be worrying about every little door ding and scratch. Back in my early 20s when I was driving the LP560, I was babying the car all the time and worrying about where I park it. Five years later, I'm parking the LP700 at Walmart, Disney World, and Universal Studios without a care in the world. Sure, people sit on my car and leave scratches with their pants buttons/belt or they write their names on the dirt on my car with their dirty fingers. But I don't think they'll be doing that with the Tesla.

I'm paying for her insurance, so that's for me to worry about (everything's going under my name, because I'm already past my gift tax exemption).

Sounds like you've thought it through. My mother wouldn't drive my P85 under almost any circumstance. She's happy with her 10 year old Camry. :/

Sounds like your mum is much more car savvy than mine who will only buy Honda and preferably red ones. She may be surprised with how much attention she gets in the Tesla though. My wife didnt like driving my P85+ because she didn't like people constantly asking her questions.

The sudden intermediate burst of cars entering production (Dec 5th) has dropped to a trickle again. I think they are still making adjustments to the line to correct for issues they are seeing during inspections. Once they have the line debugged, I am hoping the pace will pick up substantially.

I'm not sure about the trickle brit... maybe things are a bit better. it's 11:30 AM in California now, and glancing at the P85D spreadsheet I saw 8 cars reported as entering into production on the 5th, and 3 cars so far today. Small samples, and I wouldn't think all the 12/9s would be on the spreadsheet at this point.

thx. And per prior discussions, I assume they are building non-D cars as needed to keep the production line running at full speed.
Any line changes to production machinery would be done at night to avoid slowing down the two production shifts per day.

Just got this:

December 10th, 2014

Dear Matthew,

Thank you for your order of a P85D. I trust you will be delighted with the car!

Unfortunately, we experienced some delays in the production of the first P85D. I apologize for any inconvenience we are causing. We have now resolved the final concern, which was the airbag deployment for the upgraded seat design. We always want to err on the side of caution. We are building and shipping P85D cars now. Your delivery specialist will contact you shortly to finalize the delivery date.

Many thanks for your support and your patience!

Best regards,
