And that is done because those vehicles are ICEs and not EVs that can very easily go 300k+ miles without any substantial repairs. An ICE will save you money by dropping it after 100k miles, but an EV still has just as little maintenance as at the 20k mile mark. See the taxi Leafs that are at 100k+ miles and still running strong, or regular consumers pushing high mileage on the Model S (out of warranty) and still seeing little to no repair cost versus an ICE at the same level of wear.

It's all about Total Cost of Ownership, not about upfront costs.[/COLOR]
Always taught not to buy second hand police cars because they spend so many hrs on without driving. Mileage on the cars seriously underestimate the use and wear

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-09-12/tesla-to-double-component-sourcing-from-china-in-2015-tao-says

Tesla Motors Inc. is expected to double the value of components it buys from China to about $500 million this year from $250 million in 2014, Tao Lin, vice president of external affairs in China for the Palo Alto, California-based electric-car maker, said at a forum Saturday in Tianjin.

Well I heard it from a friends 3rd cousin who's gardner for an executive high up with Tesla they were behind schedule and adding extra days!

The exuberance may continue awhile longer, but analysts believe reality is about to catch up with the revellers.

"The end of the global auto cycle is nigh," said Stuart Pearson of Exane BNP Paribas, as he cut his VW rating to "neutral" from "outperform" on Thursday.

Wow crickets in here! What am i going to do with myself without pages of reading to do?!

Never thought I'd say this, but TSLA is not volatile enough for me. Heck Vancouver real estate is more volatile than TSLA this year. I think most adrenaline junkies from this forum are trying to find some filler till the reveal.

That 2nd row seat better rotate and sink down into a flat bed molded to everyone's body.

Renewable Energys Potential May Be Understated - WSJ

“Call me an optimist, but I believe we can transition to clean energy and lower bills,” says Peter Rive, co-founder of San Mateo, Calif.-based Solar City Inc. The big changes he sees happening aren’t at the grid level, but at the home. Key to making that transition, he says, will be installing solar panels with software and storage devices—namely batteries.

Having storage and panels, with software that regulates it all, will allow the grid to tell the home when it is facing a potential power overload and instruct it to charge up the battery. Later, when the grid needs power, it can call on the battery to deliver it.

New BMW CEO is open to cooperation with tech companies, including Apple, but is cautious against becoming a hardware supplier...

From streetinsider.com:
FRANKFURT (Reuters) - BMW's new chief executive Harald Krueger is open to exploring deeper partnerships with software and computer companies such as Apple, according to German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung.BMW has realized next-generation vehicles cannot be built without more input from telecoms and software experts while Apple has been studying how to make a self-driving electric car. New CEO Krueger is honing BMW's strategy.
Last year, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook went to BMW's headquarters and senior Apple executives toured the carmaker's Leipzig factory to learn how it manufactures the i3 electric car, two sources told Reuters.
The dialogue between Apple and BMW was interrupted by a leadership change at BMW. In one of his first interviews as chief executive, Krueger said he too supports the idea of exploring partnerships with tech firms.
"Fundamentally, both partners need to profit from the cooperation, otherwise it will not last. And both companies need to share the same principles, for example with regard to data security," Krueger is quoted as saying in Monday's Sueddeutsche.
Upon being asked whether BMW had explored manufacturing a car together with Apple, and whether he still sees the company as a potential partner, Krueger said: "Let me answer in general terms. There is something which makes BMW Group and Apple very similar. Both are companies with strong brands."
Besides the BMW leadership change, the dialogue between the two companies was also interrupted last year because Apple appeared to want to explore developing a passenger car on its own, one of the sources said.
Also, BMW is being cautious about sharing its manufacturing know-how because it wants to avoid becoming just a supplier to a software or Internet giant.

Well, I think that BMW needs self driving Eco system ( including charging infrastructure) to make car like i3 viable. After a surge upon introduction i3 sales are down 30%. It sure will be interesting to see how this will play out.

As far as Tesla is concerned, it appear to take a wholistic approach, and most likely will continue to be vertically integrated. I believe that they will have two variants of Model 3: one intended for private ownership, another - for shared mobility. I think this is why Adam Jonas opined that we will hear more about Tesla strategy on shared mobility in March of next year.

At first glance I thought the "uber-like" service was quite nutty because, in my mind, Tesla wouldn't do it. It just doesn't align with the company's goals... Till I mulled over it this weekend.

Tesla will only do it if it increases adoption of EV's and help the overarching goal of ridding the world of fossil fuels. In theory, this could decrease ICE usage if the service is cheap enough, especially for commuters or people who have cars for convenience that don't necessarily need them. Having an autonomous EV changes the economics of owning a vehicle which would be the main appeal. The tricky part is getting the Auto Pilot to Auto Drive which is the emphasis Elon keeps putting that people seem to forget. Nevertheless, the prospect is interesting but for people whobare riding on Tesla, you are riding on cars and batteries for now which are big big markets

BMW is ahead here. It's self-driving capabilities that customers can actually enjoy are better than what Tesla so far demonstrated. Yet Tesla sells like hotcakes, but the i3 doesn't. Therefore I don't agree that the current self-driving capabilities for a Tesla/i3 is a strong driver of sales either way (positive or negative). What the i3 misses is a unique selling proposition. There is no single feature in the i3 where it is best-in-class.

In looks, the i3 is Worst in Class. Even if the i3 were the best thing, I would not drive it.
