Selling my car tomorrow, factory reset greyed out. What all do I need to delete?

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
My factory reset option is greyed out (see pic below). Other threads here and on reddit indicate that this may have something to do with FSD Beta + FSD subscription, and that the only way past it is to bring the car into a service center to have them reset it. I'm selling the car private party tomorrow, so I don't have time to mess with scheduling a service appointment. What all do I need to remove?

  • Bluetooth audio - unpaired all devices
  • Wifi - forgot networks near my house. Unfortunately, networks that aren't currently nearby don't show up, so I guess the buyer could hop on my parents Wifi in the future if they wanted lol
  • Keys - deleted phone keys
  • Homelink - removed all saved
  • Cleared browser data

My cloud profile and all associated data is still showing up (home, recent addresses, Spotify login, etc), but my wife's disappeared when I removed her as a driver. i'm assuming that mine and associated data will disappear when I transfer the car off of my account as well?

Anything I'm forgetting? Anyone else have this issue?

Geyed out in mine too. No idea why.

How about signing all profiles out of your car?

All the favorites seem to be attached to my cloud profile, so I think once it disappears I should be safe. No way to sign out of cloud profiles on the car as far as I can tell. They automatically appear for any Tesla account associated with the car.

Factory Reset is the way to go, not sure why it’s greyed out. Is the car connected to WiFi? Do you have your phone key?

Funny story: when we traded in my wife’s Model 3 to Tesla, I tried to do a Factory Reset first (even though Tesla will do it). You have to enter your Tesla account credentials in the car to confirm the reset, but one of the special characters in my Tesla password was not available on the touchscreen keyboard, so I couldn’t do it.

I was in the same situation a couple of weeks ago. It's indeed due to the trial FSD subscription. Contact Tesla support. (888) 518-3752.

Explain your situation to the Tesla CSR. The CSR will say they can't do anything. Escalate (Nicky to Ace in Casino; 'Be nice!') to a manager. Tell the Tesla CSR Manager your situation. Have them remove the FSD subscription. To do this they'll initiate an Ownership Transfer to pull the vehicle out of your account. They'll then be able to remove the trial of FSD.

To add the Tesla back into your account, they will send you an email. You will need to respond to the email with a photo of your drivers license and the registration for the Tesla. They will then add your Tesla back into your account once they receive the required docs. You're essentially performing a vehicle transfer to yourself. All of this is done while you're on the phone with the Tesla manager.

This scenario is due to Tesla pushing the trial FSD subscription to the Tesla account, the vehicle is locked into the FSD subscription and the Tesla owner is prevented from removing it. It's possible that, by now, Tesla has had enough of these calls that they have provided the ability to perform the trial FSD removal by the Tesla CSR without an escalation.

I'm not sure if this scenario applies to an FSD subscription initiated by the Tesla owner. If it behaves like most subscriptions; the service will still be available until the anniversary date. So even if one cancelled it, the FSD subscription would still be linked to the account/car.

Another example of the trade-offs with technology which is synchronously linked in real time and controlled by the vendor.

Perfect, thank you for the detailed response. Figured it was something along these lines.

I'm handing off the car shortly, so not sure I'll have time to go through this processes. My plan is to do the account transfer when we meet up and see if that unlocks the ability to do the factory reset using the buyer's Tesla account. I've deleted any sensitive data already, so it's not the end of the world if that doesn't work. I'll let everyone know how that goes.

Only wildcard is if my cloud profile doesn't remove itself for some reason. I guess I'll cross that bridge if I come to it!

Your cloud profile will disappear as soon as the car is no longer associated with your account.

My car is on the FSD trial, and I confirmed that Factory Reset is disabled for me too. I tried disabling FSD but it made no difference. My wife’s car has FSD purchased and Factory Reset is enabled there.

Does that actually remove the cloud profile or just reset it to defaults?
I have no idea. I am not selling the car now, so I don't want to waste time experimenting.

Today's profile is not like the old-time profile. It now brings my and other drivers' portrait photos and emails into the car.

My assumption is if all profiles are removed, the car will no longer be tied to any owners (no portrait photo, no e-mail, no account), but is that enough for the FSD trial to allow the factory reset button? Not sure.

From further reading, resetting the cloud profile deletes it, but that won't delete your Tesla account or impact which account is associated with the car, and it won't likely impact the ability to do a Factory Reset.

What I wish Tesla would do is let you remove the cloud profile from a particular vehicle but keep it for a different vehicle, but it's all or nothing. If you want to know why I would want to do that, see this thread about profiles: Driver profiles -- still crazy after all these years

Cloud profile was deleted from the car when I performed the transfer. Car rebooted with the Tesla logo. Got a message on the screen indicating that FSD subscription was removed.

I didn’t check on the factory reset availability, though I probably should have. But my profile being removed took care of the bulk of it.
