I decided to put this here, since it was off topic in the investing thread, and save the mods the bother of moving it:

What would you chose to subsidize? Improving the air quality, getting off of foreign oil, strenghtening the manifacturing sector in the US? Or gambling?
Well, if I was a politician I'd probably subsidized whoever paid (bribed) me enough, because that's what they all do, regardless of political party. But since I'm a citizen and a taxpayer, I would subsidize only activities that are "common goods," that is, stuff where it is impossible or impractical to charge those who actually benefit. An example is fire fighting. You can't really run a fire department by just charging people whose houses catch fire. Or sewers: We don't want some people opting out of the sewer system and flushing their toilets into the street.

But I don't think we need to subsidize private cars. We need to remove all subsidies from gasoline. That would give EVs all the boost they need. And we need to subsidize public transportation and safe bike paths. Not just a narrow strip of a few roads, but paths separate from traffic and connecting the entire city so that people can safely bicycle from anywhere in the city to anywhere else. That subsidy would go a long way towards a sustainable infrastructure.

Casinos are a tax on stupidity. They don't need tax breaks. They need to pay 95% of their profits in tax.

Love this thread :)

Its hot as hell here today

I walked outside barefoot this morning and I think a thorn got stuck in my foot (trying to find out the best way to extract it)

What a horrible All Star game- possibly the worst of all time

Just saw Lockout - one of the worst movies of the year, plot holes so hughe they might just as well be black holes in space.

A cigar and a hughe glass og scotch is great even though it's cold outside (in July)
