Wiki Model S Delivery Update

So, this is my 2nd Tesla vehicle. The first was in 2017 and the only options at the time were the S and X. Both were fairly high priced niche vehicles. The starting price of my S was $69,990. That experience was ok. From order to delivery was about 2 weeks but they found an inventory match that met my specs. Was $76,490 before tax as I ordered it...by no means an inexpensive car but about half the price of a fully loaded P100D at the time.

Fast forward to ordering a Plaid the weekend after attending battery day (RN11399). Quite the different experience. Seeing other orders made much later getting deliveries sooner does bite. But the way I see it, this is the first major refresh since 2017 where all you really got was a much better looking (IMO) front fascia and AP2.0 hardware. A lot of those older S owners that can afford a new S I'm guessing ordered. A lot of speed freaks that saw the specs ordered. A lot of people with enough spare cash that want the best of whatever saw the quickest production car ever made also ordered. Tesla also has a lot of additional attention now with the success of the 3 and Y.

Somebody once said that Tesla has democratized performance...anybody with the ability to afford a mid range vehicle can now have one of the quickest accelerating cars on the market with the Model 3. What beats that? The new Model S...and bonus it's a family sedan with storage to spare. Combine that with the global chip and supply line shortage and the known limitations on battery production and it's no wonder some of us are having issues getting our cars.

Depending on your color/trim/wheel/location combo you could be looking at a very confusing delivery estimate if you have one at all. I'm not far from the factory but white/white/carbon/19 seems to be a death knell combo for deliveries.

Sure, it would be fantastic if the SA's would have more information to provide to us. Transparency would help us all understand better when we can expect our cars. Tesla could definitely improve in this area. But in a world of extremely limited supply among one of the most highly demanded vehicles I find it hard to believe the "competition" with their stealership model, desperate to sell one of their aging models already sitting in their lot is in anyway a better system.

We're waiting in line for one of the best vehicles you can possibly purchase at a price unheard of by the incumbents among a global shortage of unprecedented proportions. I can only imagine Tesla is making as many as they can as fast as they can of their highest margin vehicles available. So as they say...patience is a virtue (as I refresh my order page for the 50th time today).
I actually read this entire post. Glad I did. Your last paragraph nails it.

Good video showcasing a Plaid being prepped for another hill climb, this time by Electric Performance and driven by Blake Fuller

He dislikes the yoke more than I do, and they are already planning to do a Model 3 wheel swap to test, so perhaps I won't be the first to do it after all! I still plan to do the swap in mine, but also plan to have everything be fully functional on the wheel and the stalks when they are transplanted into my car. Just waiting on my order confirmation from Tesla Service to get the parts.

Edit: Btw, really nice view of the guts of the new S, and he shares some insight about the changes to the architecture/chassis that were very interesting. TLDW; the car looks nearly the same on the outside, but even the internal structure is very much new design.
Thanks for the video.

Using aluminum tubing with coolant flowing through it instead of big heavy copper wire for the connection between the charge port and the battery was very interesting.

It made turns, especially sharp corners, a real chore because you can't adjust your hand position upwards. I ended up with my arms nearly crossed over on hairpin turns, which feels extremely awkward. Even just having a bit of room to reposition higher would have helped immensely.

Additionally, the width is nice for cruising, but when the yoke is turned 90 degrees either direction, your arms feel very far apart, which is also awkward.
Out of curiosity how tall are you? Wondering if wing span will matter on that last part.

Hello all. I was not checking for a bit. We made it home safely!
3000 miles in 3 days. Plaid is an animal. Feels awesome. Charging is crazy fast.

Here are some pictures.

The driving map also had some data from my previous X.

Maybe if you park in the sun, some of those wrinkles will come out... 😂

Went to watch the sunset tonight and the way the red changes throughout the day really caught me eye! It’s insane how sexy this thing looks 😍

Also, the last question about trunk space made me realize I only sent photos with the back seats down, here’s with them up:

I love you for the pictures! But i hate you for mine not being delivered haha. COME ON TESLA. Fulfill the early orders so that i can get mine after them

Ok, I may be missing something obvious, but the tool bar (temp and other icons) is blocking part of the screen. This is noticeable on the phone and web browser. Is there a way to minimize or make it so it is not blocking part of what should be visible on the main screen?

I was using teslawaze and the setting buttons are blocked. Watched a YT video from a M3 with Teslawaze and the settings buttons are not blocked out by the bottom tool bar.

Personally it's great, but surprisingly not as great as the system in my 3. The 3's bass punches harder, but that could be a result of the car being smaller. Still a nice step up from our 2015.

I thought the sound system in the model 3 was pretty great. Yikes to hear that the model s isn't as good.

I wonder if it's an optimization thing or if the quality of the speakers just aren't good.

Man now I'm starting to think I really need to hear a review of the rivian before I buy this car.

I had the exact same concern so originally ordered white/cream. My teenage boys kept calling me a boomer so I switched to white/white 12 hours before the 5k increase.

Kids happy, wife not so much (now it looks like a spaceship)

Me personally, I am glad I made the change as online pics of white has definitely grown on me .

Hopefully after I get the car my level of enthusiasm for the white seats persists.

I have white seats and after four years and 101K miles they still look good. Very easy to clean and do not crease easily!

What did you use as temporary protection? I’d like to do something similar until I can get PPF done.
