Factory delivery or local Tesla store?

Hello! My S85 is in production right now and I've spoken with my DS about my lease. The car will be registered by Tesla for us when you lease. They will be sending a packet with the temporary plate and you'll later receive the MVD EV plates in the mail. It's very different from a purchase option. I was surprised. I would assume that taking delivery in CA wouldn't be difficult due to this.

And if I had the option to see it come off the line in CA I would have JUMPED at the chance. The How It's Made: Dream Cars - Tesla episode had me so intrigued! Hindsight being 20/20, I would have definitely visited the factory had I known about the registration loophole for leases.

Confirmed at my test drive today that delivery at the factory is an option without having tax impact on a lease. However, this won't be an option for me since I ordered my test drive vehicle. Vehicle had all the options that I wanted so we are leasing an inventory vehicle. Now to start planning a trip to Syracuse next month to take my daughter and her stuff to summer school.

Is there any cost savings in taking delivery at the factory?

The sales tax in Fremont is 9.5% http://california-sales-tax-rate.insidegov.com/l/579/Fremont

The sales tax in Newport Beach is 8.0% http://california-sales-tax-rate.insidegov.com/l/1097/Newport-Beach

Assuming your S 85 costs only $80,000 factory delivery may cost you $1,200... OUCH That's why I didn't take factory delivery of my 2015 P85D last year.

YMMV... and your DS should be able to tell you definitely.

As I understand it, the CA vehicle sales tax is based off the address that you tell Tesla to register it to, so as long as you're taking in delivery in CA and live in CA, it shouldn't make a difference.... Of course if you're planning on taking the car out of state, I can imagine it gets more complicated.

Not to derail this thread, but what paint treatment is the OP referring to? I always take decent care of my car, parked in a garage, and never had any paint issues on my Honda/Acura cars. Is the Tesla paint more fragile that it needs post-factory treatment?

From my recent experience(End of April), delivery at the factory is skipping a level of QC that occurs at the service center. During delivery I pointed out that the seals around the FWD's were not seated correctly and were wrinkled. Glue was actually present on the seals to stick them to the frame but they were "ribbon like" and not sticking at all. The DS got a technician from the back and he said they were within spec's and the vehicle had passed inspection and a water test. Exiting the factory we immediately noticed very loud high wind noise from the passenger door area at any speed above 30mph. The only way to make it go away was to crack the window half an inch.

Upon returning to home I scheduled with our local service center to look at these two issues. They found several more issues and said that they were surprised that the vehicle would have been delivered without these being identified and being corrected prior to handover.

Your experience may differ and while overall I don't regret taking delivery at the factory I would be prepared to visit your local service center to have the vehicle inspected and corrected.
