Elon driving cross-country

Just be sure to refuse giving Aunt Edna a ride, and don't hook the family dog to the liftgate latch.

Maybe he could rock a custom olive green paint job with wood paneling?

Would love to have a date for his trip. Just so we would know when the superchargers will actually be in. Traveling between NY and Boston or Cape Cod only SC are in CT on I95 the slowest route for me. The two towns in CT only have two SC per (on each side of I95). Would love to see him with long wait to recharge.

I bummed to see NEW Charging stations all over Norway, with picture of five SCs at one site. Just saying....

I love my Model S. I would just like to have some SCs on my chosen all Interstate 300 one way mile trip.

John

Darien, CT North has 4 chargers and Darien South is almost done and also has 4 chargers. I wouldn't be surprised if the upcoming Providence, RI - Greenwich, CT - NJ Turnpike also have at least 4 chargers each.

Could this be Elon's planned route?

I've been asked by a few skeptics about the 9 hours of charging. I spent some time trying to re-create the trip.
I have done a few trips outside my range, some with supercharging, and verified my model/spreadsheet with real-world data.

There are some big IF's that Elon will need to follow to make this happen:

- Actual miles to rated miles used needs to be 90%. That means clear weather, no headwind, 65-68 mph, and no hills. :)
- Stop at EVERY supercharger along the way; AKA, don't plan to go more than 200 miles between superchargers.
- Drain the range to around 10 miles rated when arriving at each supercharger. This assures you maximize rated miles per hour of charge before the charging slows down.
- Don't charge more than the miles of rated range plus 10 to get to the next supercharger. Again, optimize for time.

Assumptions:
- 120 kW and 310 Wh/rated-range mile at every supercharge: 385 rated miles charged per hour (linear calculation). That means booting your neighbor if the shared-charger spot is taken.
- Very rough estimation for Supercharger locations. I chose the city or town closest to the red AND gray dots on the Winter 2013 Supercharger map.
- Used Google Maps to plot the route, from Hawthorne, CA to Brooklyn, NY. I only had to enforce one deviation from Google's suggested route, to ensure to drive through Rapid City, SD, and then the route fit the dots.

With those constraints, I was able to plan what I think is Elon's route, for about 3200 miles and 9 hours of charging:

FWIW, I don't see anything near Clearfield, PA until the 2014 Map, and it's not even a red dot until 2015!

Although it appears something around Breezewood, PA is a grey dot in the Winter 2013 map which would work.

He said it was a 6 day trip, so they'll be sleeping at hotels for 5 nights, they will likely end up plugging in at hotels that have charging available on the way, I don't think he needs to stick to SuperChargers exclusively. When they are sleeping, sightseeing, eating, that charging time doesn't count :)

Elon's route through Pennsylvania will *not* be via Route 80 - it will divert after Youngstown, OH past Pittsburg down to the PA Turnpike and east to NJ.

I analyzed this when I was plotting the route for driving out to Teslive next summer....

Aaron

Elon & Family should take a train across with WHISTLESTOPS whenever one or more TESLAs are reported ahead at any RailRoad Station. Tweets would constantly update how many Teslas at such n such Station. How much the train slows down would be proportional to # of Teslas presenting. Also the length of whistle blast. Treatment befitting Royalty; reliving the Golden Age of Economical Transport and all that. Would keep us Hoi Polloi out from underfoot, too.

Zoom in on the supercharger map and you'll see where they are in PA...

Aaron

Correction - PA Turnpike east to DE Supercharger then a quick hop over the DE Memorial Bridge into NJ and up to NYC.

I agree he will divert/stop at the Delaware Supercharger. Perfect place to charge and allow for NYC finish.

Memo from the Boss

FROM: Elon
TO: Supercharger Team

There has been a slight change of plans. I've designated the attached list of supercharger sites as "immediate priority" so I can complete the cross-country trip with my kids as promised. Feel free to disregard the current plan and de-prioritize other sites as necessary to get this done by mid-December.

We've got 90 days. You guys are great, I know you can do it!

John, All

Here's my post on the 2014 Cross Country Drive to Teslive on the thread in the Teslive forum. I based it in the Winter 2013 Tesla Supercharger Map by zooming into it and matching it up as close as I could on google maps....

Aaron if your map is correct then Tesla needs to install 19 superchargers prior to Elon's trip. Assuming he travels around the end of the year then we are talking about 19 opening 1.5 chargers per week! However if we assume that Tesla will build out all of the Winter 2013 chargers by year end then we are talking about opening 60 superchargers over the next 15 weeks. 4 per week.

Heh, I think many of us are thinking that.

Great analysis! I have some thoughts on Utah, my neck of the woods, but we are only off an exit or two off, here or there: Utah Super Charger Locations

My big question is why did Tesla put the big jog (I call it the Mt Rushmore Detour) into the route. If they had just put in Superchargers down I-76 east out of Denver and then followed I-80 to Chicago, the route would have been a lot shorter and a few Superchargers fewer.

Why is the justification for the Mt Rushmore Detour? I don't think its to look at four U.S. Presidents cast in stone.

I think Dennis answered your question in his Memo from the Boss...
