It funny how they spend years designing an environmentally friendly BEV using cutting edge technology, and we sit here nit picking the sound system... and the fact that there aren't enough cup holders.

As a later purchaser of the Roadster, any pictures of disassembly would be great to give me an idea of what can be done. Although I probably wont be the one doing it, I know a lot about this kind of stuff, and I am very hands-on with my auto-electronic installer.

Does anyone have photos of a TM factory installed subwoofer?

I think you make a complete statement. That Tesla spent years on a cutting edge powertrain but gave minimum thought to the rest of the stuff. We find ourselves trying to bring the level of the ammenities to the same level as the technology under the hood.

As for cupholders...

I'm planning to install (soon) these sub woofers http://www.tb-speaker.com/detail/1208_03/w5-1138sm.htm into the rear speaker locations. I'll use a low pass filter to create bass/sub-bass at the rear, mid on the dash and treble from the front. I'll post my results; so far, mid and treble up front is installed and working well.

Interesting choice putting in small subs instead of woofers in back. I'm really anxious to hear how you like that setup. Let us know!

Blaupunkt Rome

Hi all EU owners

After a month of trying to get the Nav working and not succeeding i hope to find some help here. The radio works OK, so does the MP3 Stick adapter and i can listen to my iPod over a Griffin FM adapter. Not what i was expecting for the price tag, but we're supposed to suffer for all the fun the Roadster offers otherwise ; -). But the Nav does not work, i can enter an adress but it never gives directions whatever. From the sales rep i get the usual answers... nice but not so helpful.

Blaupunkt tells me to take the unit from the batteries, check the GPS antenna (wich should apparently be somewhere visible on the dash (!) and check the speed connection cable. But not being a skilled mech, i'd rather leave this to the specialists. Does any of the EU owners have similar experiences ? Does your Nav work ? Could yoou connect your iPhone over Bluetooth (i was told the Blaupunkt unit was not ready for that...).

Or has anyone ripped the junk out and got something that works ?

Thanks

Resurrecting this old thread which was helpful on my recent front speaker upgrade. I replaced the factory speakers with Focal PC100 speakers. These are 4" coaxial units and the speaker diameter was a direct fit for the factory ones. In order to get the grills installed neatly, I added a 1/4" spacer ring between the dash and the speaker flange. The depth of these speakers is about 0.75" greater than the factory speakers and the grills sit very close (but don't quite touch) the windshield. Overall, I'm happy with the front speaker upgrade.

I purchased the same Focal speakers to replace the rears and am interested to hear what others have done with the existing rear enclosures to make deeper speakers fit. Is is advisable to cut the panel beneath the speaker enclosure, or does the enclosure have to be built up to accommodate greater depth speakers? Any pictures would be much appreciated.

I have the same problem. I realized that the speaker enclosure can be increased vertically without blocking any visibility due to the sides of the car protruding upwards on the trunk area.

Dont wait for me, but I'm going to try and make an enlarged enclosure in January. Any good car audio shop should be able to make you speaker enclosures that fit.

Did anyone find a useful and appropriate looking single DIN Radio, yet?
The US Version of the JVC KD-NX5000 doesn't work in Germany, so I'll either just buy the EU version or a different unit (e.g. Alpine IDA-X305).
I won't replace amplifier and speakers because the car has the premium audio upgrade.

If anyone is interested, just had the stock subwoofer of the car next to me and thought I'll post a picture...

I used to hate the nx5000, but after discovering Bluetooth, I just use my iphone navigation, music streaming and dash mount.

At first, my iphone 4 BT was very choppy, after switching to iphone 5, works fine.

That's a good idea, so I can even keep the JVC and just use my Android phone.

I would not have guessed that this was a speaker of any kind...

Arguably, the US version of the JVC KD-NX5000 doesn't work in the USA, either...

Ok, so the German version won't work in Germany either^^

I'd suspect that they knew where they could safely cut below the speaker to make these deeper than stock speakers work, or the enclosure depth was changed after the 1.5 cars. My car is a 1.5.

Mine is a 1.5 as well.

Tesla told me that "The factory speakers are 4” x 2.25." The PC100 are 51.5mm deep (which is less than 2.25"). The grills stick up about another inch from the stock ones. Maybe they get mounted on top instead of from below.

Interesting - I guess there could be different factory speakers supplied? Mine were Blaupunkt THx 402 and are 4" dia x 1.5" deep (just measured them). The PC100 speakers were around 2.25" deep. There was a definite interference when I attempted to fit the PC100 in the rear enclosure, so I have no idea why they fit one car and not another. The spacer I made is 3/4" thick, matching the depth difference between the stock speakers and the new ones.

Another issue I was trying to accommodate with the spacer was that the Focal grills were not round but the stock grills were. Do grills fit the enclosure on your car? If I had just put them on as-is, the portion with the "Focal" emblem would have hung over the edge of the enclosure below it.
