There is enough information on mobile eye on the TMC which I will not repeat. The new change is that mobileye has brought out a new enhancement box (Nov 2013) to add to a standard mobileye 5 series system. This will also retrofit to an existing installation. The advantage of this enhancement box is that it provides an analog output to control a relay which can be wired to the brake pedal sensor ( brake light) this allows mobileye to disconnect the cruise control and activate the regenerative braking on the model S. The time to collision that disconnect and alerts is adjustable from 0.1 seconds to 3 seconds. I have found that 0.5 seconds works well. On a normal day my cruise control is on then as I approach a car in front and get too close the cruise kicks off automatically via mobileye, I then reengage the cruise control by pushing the cruise control stick down which reengages at the current lower speed. This is great if distracted to mitigate the chance of rear ending the car in front.
Another feature not designed into mobileye but in practice actually works on MS. For some reason when the mobile eye activate the cruise control disconnect the brakes get applied for a split second as well as the regen. In practice this also happens with the cruise control off. If I am driving with no cruise and get to close to the vehicle in front of me it will tap the brakes to alert me of a potential impact as well as alarm. It does not do this every time (just alarm every time) but is an added bonus about 50 % of the time when manually driving with no cruise control on.
Other features of mobile eye which work well
lane departure warning
collision monitoring and alert as well as cruise control disconnect and regen as well as alert and occasional brake application without cruise
speed limit sign reading and display of over speed limit amount in 5 mile increments (adjustable to display at over speed limit, 10mph over etc
rolling forward bumper alert when stopped behind a car at a light, if you start to roll it will alert you before hitting car in front.
pedestrian and motorcycle/bicycle warning for possible collision.
Also connects to your iphone for adjustment and speed sign display although the actual display coming with the mobileye will display mph over current speed limit.
The price or mobileye 560 including installation with the e box as $1450 without the ebox $1100 (florida prices)
