FSD warning: huge hotspot data hog

Just a quick warning … I engaged the free FSD trial a month and an half ago … and then did a subscription today for a big trip. While FSD was engaged it ran through my hotspot data plan at the rate of several gigs per day. Tesla needs to do a better job of explaining this as it was totally unexpected.

I think it may be possible to work around this by unchecking a bunch of the data sharing options. But still figuring that out.

TACC doesn't work correctly after the 2024.14.8 update

I don't trust Autosteer and doesn't have FSD trial, so I set Autopilot to TACC in my 2024 Model 3 LR AWD. Since the 2024.14.8 firmware update I cannot engage TACC and the screen doesn't show lane lines, only cars. I have Autopilot set to TACC only and it worked fine with the factory 2024.8.100 firmware. I found that if I switch Autopilot to Autosteer, put the car in gear and then switch back to TACC, I can engage TACC normally, but I have to do this every time I start driving. I called Tesla service and was advised to request a service appointment, which I did. However, since I can work around the issue I think the hardware on my car is fine and it is a bug with the update. Does anyone else have this issue?

How to know what software your car should have

Hi There,

First time poster so if I have put this in the wrong place or it is answered elsewhere I apologise in advance.
Just picked up my first Tesla and I had a question about software updates - how do you know what the current version is based on your model and country? I can’t seem to find an easy answer to this online. I know that the car should automatically tell you if there is an update but I am just curious to know.

Also, does the Model Y have Tesla Vision Park Assist? If so any idea what variants do/don’t have it and is it something you need to pay for?

Thanks,
Gareth

Rear towbar hitch cover missing

Had my M3P MOT'd last week...the next day the car started to emit quite a loud noise from the rear at anything above about 25-30mph. Noise disappeared when stopped. Took the opportunity to have a look around rear wheel arches, nothing untoward. Then, I checked under the rear bumper and noticed the tow bar hitch cover was missing. Could be a coincidence, but I am suspicious. But anyway, I think that's where the noise is being generated. The thing is, please does anyone have a suggestion as to if/how I could effect a temporary repair (safely), that might lessen or prevent the noise, whilst the spare part makes its way over from China? I've considered cardboard & duct tape, but I'm not sure that's going to tick the 'safe' box. 😉 Sounds like a low-flying light aircraft passing overhead! 😉

Refused Model Y delivery. What's next?

Had the pickup for my new MYLR today. Unfortunately there was a large scratch on the left mirror, not to mention bunch of rock chips on the hood. Plus there were tons of swirl marks. The black paint makes the swirls look 10 times worse. Told the adviser and he immediately saw from a distance the huge scratch.

They decided to take the car in to fix it, but couldn't do it at the spot. The did fix the couple rock chips with spot paint, but on black paint, those fixed areas were standing out. The Tesla advisor was super nice and told me that I could accept and come back on a later day to get it fixed, or reject the car. I wasn't in a rush to get the car (already have my Model 3 running well), so decided to reject.

Additionally he told me that later in the day he would put the account on hold for a couple days or so, and then take it off hold, so I could be assigned a new VIN. But so far it has been over a day, I still see the old VIN and car in my account , still asking me to accept the delivery. Has my account been put on hold and this is just a UI glitch in app? Tried to reach out over message to the advisor, but so far no response from them. I have the 0.99% approved till 10th July, 90 days approval, so not too worried, but still wanted to check from other who have refused delivery, regarding what happens.

Mockup of Screen with No Map, Visualization

Just for fun, I thought of what I would want to see on the display if I didn't care about the map (driving near home) or the visualization. This is what I came up with:

Tesla Screen Mockup.png

I didn't want to spend a lot of time on this, that's why, for example, the speedometer image goes to 240 MPH. I made personal choices for buttons:

  • Graphic speed display with MAX (green) and speed limit (orange).
  • I added the glovebox control because my wife often wants to open it.
  • I put a fold-mirrors button, because, although rarely used, it could be important in an emergency (approaching car coming close).
  • I put a nice big Record button (for post-emergency).
  • Note that the fan icon shows whether heat or AC is on (that's important because sometimes the car thinks it's warmer inside than it is).
  • Nice big wiper controls (yes, I know I can use the scroll wheel).

What would you put on your screen?

Recurrent: Model 3 drivers got 72% of EPA range with new cars, 64% after three years

Study says that Tesla Model 3 drivers reporting to Recurrent were getting about 72% of EPA range with new cars, 64% after three years. 72->64 is about 12% loss, which is apparently considered fairly typical for NCA batteries.

But it also indicates that the average Tesla Model 3 driver drives much less economically than the EPA driver / test, to the point of 28% worse efficiency (or 39% greater consumption), when looking at the actual range experienced versus the EPA range.

a249 and a210 errors and potential leak from rear

Hi,

The last few days I have noticed my December 2019 (50k miles and out of basic warranty) M3P fan on a bit more than normal. I have however used superchargers driving in Europe a lot so maybe a coincidence.

On the latest stop I thought I'd look at the temps via service mode and found the attached errors.

I have read through and see the 5 way valve appears to a fairly common issue on 2018 models but assume not on this late a model?

My friend then saw a load water droplets coming out the back of the car ( have a video if handy). It could have been water that had been sitting but likeways something related / more serious. Hopefully not.

Shall I just book it into a service centre and take the hit or are there some simple steps first? I don't mind replacing the valve myself if it is likely to be that but do worry if there is something more sinister with batteries Tesla may try blame my handy work.

Battery performance and range seem to be fine so far.

Any help would be massively appreciated

Value of FSD on resale

In evaluating upgrading to FSD at $8000, I looked into what the resale value of a model S with FSD versus one without. Using KBB as my guide, it looks like FSD at best will add $3000 to the resale value of a Tesla. That’s a lot of instant depreciation for a $8000 upgrade. Even worse at $12000. Is this indicative of the market voting with its dollars saying FSD is not worth the investment? I drive a 2024 model Y with FSD having transferred it from my 2018 model S 75D. Was thinking about selling the model S and was surprised at a fairly consistent resale value of only about $24000 on Carvana and KBB. Same car with FSD valued at $27000. Value is based on a California location where there are many used Teslas for sale. I do use FSD and like the auto park, summon (very useful when people park to close to the driver side doors) and highway FSD aspects of it. Based on my street driving use of it, I have no confidence in its ability to operate predictably or consistently.

LFP range in decent weather

Hi,

I’ve posted about this before but it appeared to be down to the chillier weather but I could do with some advice on range for my 2021 SR+.

I’m only getting about 130 miles out of a full charge, and the weather has been pretty nice (17deg and upwards). The battery hasn’t really been cold and my whpm appears to be reasonable.

I hear people with LFP saying in summer weather they can get 180+ miles and whilst that would be great, I travel about 150 miles a week so I means having to charge twice a week which I think is a bit silly (renovations mean I have no home charger at the moment). Charging twice a week at 80ppkw is costing me about £80 for a twice a week charge… more than any other car I’ve owned.

Im not sure what I’m doing wrong!

I’ve attached a couple of photos.

Thanks

Tesla Model S Headlight "Base" vs "Up-Level"

I currently own a 2017 Model S 75 equipped with the standard 'Base' headlights. Unfortunately, the LED strip on my headlight brow has burnt out, prompting me to consider replacing both headlights. I'm exploring the possibility of upgrading to the 'Up-Level' headlights and wondering if this swap would be compatible without encountering any issues. Can I seamlessly install the 'Up-Level' headlights in place of the 'Base' ones?

Will I get a MYP today? (First car declined delivery 🥺)

Well all excited to pick up brand new MYP Stealth Grey. First the “15 min process” took about an hour and half to even see the car. So the whole process looked like a great experience in all the Delivery Day video I watched. Then, car comes out for delivery (finally) and it’s a mess! Pollen still everywhere, much of the car (entire 1/4 panels) not even washed, dirt/grime in every corner, leaves stuck in the wiper area, then for stuff that couldn’t be fixed with a good detailing, scratches all over, and the frunk hood was lower (by enough to notice just looking at it).

Declined car…they have a second in stock. It’s getting ready. Hopefully it isn’t strike two and I’m out.

Sorry a disappointing first post, was hoping for a much better experience.

If you could provide power to your neighbors, would you?

The grid is more unstable each year due to increasing renewable penetration without sufficient energy storage. It was designed for slow, stable, turbine-based generators and we are offsetting them with massive banks of inverters that don't contribute a fraction of the stability.

The grid of the future must integrate resources to the residential level, like EVs, to address this. Imagine a tight web with millions of generators and loads where power can be supplied right next to where it’s needed.

What would it take to allow someone to sell your EV's power while you weren't using it? What control over it or flexibility would you need? What would hold you back?
