Anyone have insight on this?
I don't know of any auto manufacturer that does serious aftermarket work, such as you describe. There are excellent aftermarket specialists, particularly for sound systems and interior finishes. The "speak now or forever hold your peace" options would appear to be:Though has Tesla said anything about later installations? Such as if I got textiles instead of leather, will I be able to install leather? This is just an example, things like the sound system is something I can wait on too, but I don't know if thats an option.
Seems unlikely -- if you don't have a reservation already, then anything until April/May 2013 doesn't matter. Moreover, Tesla told us that they intend to use the online configurator as the means by which we order our vehicles.Isn't it possible the dates given in the design studio are for new customers? Like someone designing his Model S and then chooses to reserve one? Just a thought ...
I loaded a Performance model with everything but the in-law seats and the high-power wall connector. Color is green with the 21-inch silver wheels. Interior is tan leather with carbon fiber accents. No carbon fiber rear spoiler.
Price is $102,050.
I need a Nixon mask and a shotgun so I can rob a bank. Anybody willing to be an accomplice?
(I kid, I kid.)

Just hire John Edwards...I hear that now he's not going to jail, he will have a consulting business on how to find money when there isn't!

I don't know of any auto manufacturer that does serious aftermarket work, such as you describe. There are excellent aftermarket specialists, particularly for sound systems and interior finishes. The "speak now or forever hold your peace" options would appear to be:
- Battery size. Sure, you could replace the battery with a bigger one, but it's a huge expense.
- Active air suspension
- Panoramic roof
- Performance / standard powertrain
- Tech package (in part). You can retrofit headlamps and fog lights
We should add "Supercharge hardware" and "Twin Chargers" as well to this list; no indication from Tesla that these could be added afterwards.
TM told me in the store that the twin chargers were definitely something I could add later.
Also, I get a little "i" next to the option when I select the Gray interior. Clicking on it brings up the following message:
ENTERS PRODUCTION NOVEMBER 2012
The Grey Performance Interior enters production in November 2012 and may delay delivery.
They are also finally quoting the price without the federal tax incentive which is better I think.
Conspiracy theorists might suggest they are experiencing delays in general, and are just prepping us by inserting different options that would cause these "delays". Let's hope not.
I'm not sure I see the linkage; while both will help with range, range is just a side benefit of the air suspension. I'm getting the air suspension to manage the gravel roads of Maine, which not infrequently have wash-outs. Air suspension will also help manage those steep ramps in parking garages, driveways, etc. without scraping the paint.
I'm surprised that the gray interior is going into production late. This option seems trivially simple to deliver. Fortunately, I'd settled on tan.
