It seems to me that what's going on is that the larger batteries have higher power. That would explain the faster 0-60 times, the higher top speeds, and also the lack of "supercharging" on the smaller batteries: They just can't accept energy that fast. It makes sense when you think about it. Sticking in 160 miles of charge in a half hour to a 160 mile battery is a full charge in a half hour (2C). Doing the same for a 300 mile battery is a little more than half that rate (1.1C).
There is a separate thread on this - we should probably use that - but given that non-liquid cooled Leaf's 24kWh battery can handle QC, 40kWh S shouldn't have a problem. In anycase, they could have reduced the power if they wanted.

I think from a competetive angle, this makes the base S look worse than Infiniti EV.

I ran the prices for what differed between the Sig and non-Sig, thus I didn't throw in the roof option since it doesn't affect the price differential.

Code:
                 Base Sport Sig Sig Sport

So...Sigs are over priced. For non-Sigs, sport upgrades are effectively $8500 if you were going to get the other goodies anyway. Given I don't care about Signature Red or the badging, if I downgrade from Sig, don't care about the twin charger, want one of the $750 dollar paint jobs, then I can get a Sport edition for close to the same price as a regular Sig.

Which would you rather have? A pretty decked out Sport or a non-sport Sig? Yea, me too, seems a no-brainer.

So now it says "Deliveries Fall 2012" for non-signatures. So even the "R" list with 85kwh is going to have to wait until the fall?

Yup. "R" cars come after all Sig models. Tesla was talking production numbers around 6K in 2012, starting in July. That's an average rate of 1K per month, but my guess is they'll start out a lot slower and end the year a lot faster.

I have the highest "R" production number in the US (270). I'm figuring after Labor Day but before Halloween.

"Additional Standard Equipment $5000" - I do believe that's just saying how much the extra features are worth, because later on it says Napa Leather is included, Active Air Suspension is standard, High Performance Wheels are standard, and High Performance Tires are no-cost option. And those together are $5000.

So for a full-up configuration, with Pano roof but no rear facing seats or HPC, I get:

Model SPerformanceSignatureSignature Performance
Price 85kWh Battery$69,900.00$79,900.00$87,900.00$97,900.00
Panoramic Roof$1,500.00$1,500.00$1,500.00$1,500.00
21” Wheels and Performance Tires$3,500.00
Leather Seats$1,500.00
Tech Package$3,750.00$3,750.00
Sound Studio$950.00$950.00
Air Suspension$1,500.00
Parcel Shelf (cargo cover)$250.00$250.00
Twin Chargers$1,500.00$1,500.00
Total
$84,350.00$87,850.00$89,400.00$99,400.00
Delta Signature to Regular
$5,050.00
$11,550.00

So here's the thing: $5,050 seems like a reasonable surcharge for the Signature. But $11,550.00 does NOT seem like a reasonable surcharge for the Signature Performance. Here's why: upgrading to Performance gives you the 21" Wheels and Performance Tires, Leather Seats, and Air Suspension. But Signature already has those options - a total of $6,500.00 of options that you appear to be paying for twice.

I don't think they've thought this through.

Well, for me, any surcharge isn't acceptable. I gave Tesla an extra $35k to play with for a while, I certainly didn't expect a surcharge on top of it.

As I said earlier, I'll wait until after the holidays to verify the surcharge exists, but if it does I'll be looking to trade my Sig spot with a P holder. If it comes to that, would you mind me starting a thread somewhere asking for the swap? I'll have to check with Tesla first to figure out if that's allowed or not. I'm really wishing I hadn't upgraded to the Sig now.
