Model S Exterior: Paint Armor

A friend of mine who is also a reservation holder was also concerned about the paint armor only covering part of the hood and asked Tesla about it. This is the response she got back last week:

We have updated our Paint Armorto cover the entire hood. Attached is a PDF of the paint armor.
I hope this helps.

I bet they'll replace yours for free too Dadaleus...can you live with it until your first service (at your current rate of driving that's just 9 weeks away!

The enlarged PDF is still the original paint armor. I don't know about that first one on the Tesla Store online though. It doesn't look like it would cover the whole hood, and it looks like they removed coverage for several other surfaces. Hopefully, that's just the abbreviated illustration of the original paint armor.

That's spectacular! Can you attach the PDF here in the forums or provide a link to it?

She didn't send me the e-mail with the attachment but I just e-mailed George Bodenheimer asking for it.

Are hopes are now dashed. Here's the response from George:

Jason,

I was mistaken when tellingRhonda that it would cover the entire hood, the paint armor coverage is stillthe same. I apologize for the inconvenience. I am going to email Rhonda rightnow.

Responses like this make me really suspicious. I find it hard to believe that a product specialist would have simply been completely "mistaken" in such a response. I think it much more likely that full hood coverage is either still in discussion for the future, was considered but was rejected, or was changed but then they backed out for fear of costs to retrofit anyone with the partial-hood.

Of course, any concerns like this are usually resolved favorably by a wonderfully transparent clarification from George B, and we are better off just waiting for resolution than fretting about it or second-guessing their motives in the meantime.

One annoyance I would point out: I'm not very happy with the paint armor. The hood with the armor only halfway up is particularly unattractive. Pretty much everyone who sees the car immediately notices and comments. I've decided to pay a 3rd party to remove it and reapply it to the whole hood. In addition, other spots they applied it have a significant orange peel effect. I'm going to ask Tesla to redo those. Overall, I do not recommend doing it through Tesla.
Dadaleus, thanks for the candid feedback. I am extremely happy w/ the paint armor on my Roadster so it's odd that it would be so bad on Model S. Maybe like you said it's just inexperience. Will be interesting as others take delivery.

Orange peel is a common complaint with 3M PPF. It's very durable due to the adhesives, but has orange peel. If tesla offered Xpel Ultimate or Clear GuardX films, which to me, have almost no orange peel and excellent clarity, it'd be far better deal. Premier Mobile Group (not affiliated in any way, just a happy customer) with has a site right by the Tesla factory in Fremont and another location in SoCal (anaheim) can apply the top brands of PPF. Prices would probably be triple, but you can get the whole hood done as well as the whole rear bumper, mirrors etc.

Got a call from my Tesla rep and he pushed through the paperwork to cancel the Paint Armor (no change to dates since I'm P2840). I really wish I could have seen it on my color in person, but I can always get it done after market and get the whole hood done. I told him to pass on up the line that if Tesla chooses to change the coverage to include the full hood, folks like me would be interested again.

I've been VERY happy with the 3rd-party clear bra on my Roadster, so boy was I disappointed when I saw a Model S delivered near me last week. It had some scratches and bubbles, but worst was the orange peel appearance. I'm not a terribly picky person, but if mine (already on the truck, can't change it now) looks like that, I will complain. Everything else on the car looked great; I hope it was just one bad post-inspection application.

EDIT: just to be clear, I didn't notice this when the car first pulled up on the trailer; it wasn't THAT bad. It wasn't until the car was off the trailer and I was inspecting the car that I saw it. But I can inspect the film on my car and not see that kind of stuff.

Yes, I loved it on the Roadster too.

I just added a note to my original post because I think it was rather too strongly worded. I fixated on the hood line and a little orange peel on the front bumper. But stepping back (figuratively and literally) the car does look great and I'm very happy with it. I just think the armor leaves a little room for improvement.

Just got my configure email (P6316) but I am still on the fence about the 3M patin armor. I am going with silver. Anyone received a silver Model S with factory paint armor yet?

Thinking about going aftermarket with Xpel and getting the whole hood done but it won't be cheap I assume.

If you're going to have aftermarket paint armor done, probably best to save the money and just do it all aftermarket. Kind of wish I had done that. Tesla did a good job but am thinking about having the entire hood done.

I'm sort of hoping Tesla offers a new paint armor option in place of, or in addition to, the existing one before too many cars go out the door. I cancelled my order for paint armor, but I told them if they revisit the coverage I'd reconsider.

The problem with pre cut kits is that they do not roll over the edges. The front edge-line/lip of the hood is exposed and anything that hits the edge of the hood will definitely chip since it's a weak point in the paint anyways. Some hoods don't have the lip/edge of the hood exposed and is recessed / flush with the bumper or other front fascia.
