And only when tightly coiled with multiple coils...
I've encountered a fire caused by a loosely coiled extension cord laying flat on the floor and plugged in and powering a fan. UP IN SMOKE. A real mess. Lucky it was in a cinder block building with no other combustibles around to ignite. Coiled cords can be dangerous, I was taught early on back in welding school to always fake out the welding leads and to NEVER leave them coiled while welding for this very reason.
