Hotel Charging

How about this - who has ever seen a Nema plug for EV use (on purpose) at a full size hotel? The boutique hotel that someone paid to have them install it doesn't count. Now - how many J1772s are at hotels? So what is it 1000 to 10?

Here is a partial list of chain hotels with NEMA 14-50 plugs for EV use in areas I am familiar with:

Holiday Inn Express in Belmont, CA
Westin Mission Hills Resort, Rancho Mirage, CA
JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort, Palm Desert, CA
Hyatt Regency Indian Wells, CA
La Quinta Resort, La Quinta, CA
W Hotel, Scottsdale, AZ
Best Western, Payson, AZ
Westin La Paloma, Tucson, AZ
Aria, Las Vegas, NV

Now the ideal situation is places like the Oaks Hotel in Paso Robles that have both J1772s and 14-50s. But it's a heck of a lot cheaper to install a 14-50 than a J1772. The 14-50 I used at the Westin in Tucson is simply an outlet on the end of a 50-amp extension cord that they bring out if you call ahead and say you need to charge your car. It couldn't have cost them more than a few hundred dollars to install, but I got me back on the road after an overnight stay and I chose them over the Arizona hotel in Tucson with their bank of shiny J1772s because I didn't want to wait around for another six hours after breakfast for my car to finish charging.

The Nema 14-50 was not meant for frequent plugging and unplugging. Any electrician would recommend the J1772 in a commercial installation.

While that's undoubtedly true for residential grade 240V outlets, ala Home Depot $10 variety, there are heavy duty industrial grade outlets that are designed to hold up to more frequent plugging and unplugging. The Hubble brand NEMA 14-50 has been mentioned around here many times. At $50 it's considerably more than a Home Depot one, but more appropriate for a hotel application. Hopefully a good electrician would know the difference.

I'd also point out that tens of thousands of RV parks around North America have had 50A and 30A outlets for decades that see frequent RV hookups and disconnects, so a NEMA 14-50 outlet can actually work fine for this.

The meaning of "frequent" may be in question here. My NEMA 14-50s seem to have been sourced for RV purposes, and as such I would expect them to be good for plugging and unplugging every day or every few days, as you would expect from RVs. Sounds fine for hotels. At home, I do so even less.

But for restaurants, you might expect 10 or more plugging/unplugging cycles per day, and that might call for a J1772.

Just came across this, although it's from June 2012:

Over New Years we drove down from Sacramento and stayed at the Lowe's which has a free J1772. Great hotel but you have to valet the car. First valet was very familiar with Teslas and asked for the adapter. Second not so much. I highly recommend it.

P.S. The Tesla store is within walking distance and there is a service center there in a different location too.

I somehow doubt this list. I am driving across country and tried to find a good place to charge in Chattanooga. I started with hotels and I know I called at least one of these and they kind of laughed at me. I found two friendly Model S owners that I texted that would let me charge at their home. I ended up deciding to drive through Birmingham Alabama instead as there was some sights downtown to see within walking distance of a free Chargepoint with the backup plan being a Nissan dealer.

There really really needs to be a searchable way to do this. Plugshare does not work for this either, you just spend too much time trying to connect charge to hotel area.

Just came across this, although it's from June 2012:

I don't understand why PlugShare doesn't work - I found Chattanooga on the map and quickly see charging available at Doubletree Hotel, Courtyard Chattanooga Downtown, Staybridge Suites Downtown, Chattanoogan Hotel, plenty of others...

We should include VRBO in the list of sites to recommend having a check box for EV charging. I own a vacation rental house in Florida (near Disney) and I plan on installing a NEMA 14-50 for guests. It would be great if they could find me on VRBO that way.

As a last resort, I've called hotels and verified the status of the chargers before making trips. In some cases, if the hotel knows I'm coming and will be using the chargers, they'll put out traffic cones for the Tesla spaces - which has been pretty successful in keeping the spaces from being ICEd.

I have had good luck using the Tesla "Find Us" web page to find Hotels with charging. It seems like its faster to use that than plugshare.

PlugShare allows you to filter out types of chargers so you can have it only show HPWC's if you want.

Do people actually travel cross country in a Leaf? That would be interesting.

As a Leaf owner, I would say no. I could barely get an hour outside Atlanta before I'd run out of juice in my Leaf. The furthest I drive it is to the airport (about 40 - 45 miles), and I still have to park offsite somewhere I can charge just to be able to get back home again.

I am looking forward to my Tesla coming in December (or whenever it arrives) so that I can actually drive my car somewhere other than back and forth to work and on short errands.
