Sorry English is my second language. I didn't understand your point.

No need to apologize, you do very well.
His meaning is that the "earth" is the planet orbiting the sun.
"Mankind" is not the same as "Earth", at least in English.

So, mankind could be gone and the earth will remain.

In the U.S., every once in a while, someone makes the false argument that climate change will be the end of the earth.
Denialist said then make fun of that position and attribute it to all people that argue climate change is a critical issue.

As George Carlin once said, the earth will go merrily upon its way circling the sun after we are all long gone.

Stephen Colbert gave a great commencement speech this year. I'm posting it in here because it has some of these topics in the speech.

Loved the reference to Space X being plan B; Yep, Solar City and Tesla are plan A... with humanities track record Elon is probably going to need plan B.... but that doesn't mean we give up.

'For better or worse, the earth is where we make our stand' - Carl Sagan

IIRC, Elon's goal of colonizing a second planet is driven in part by the risk of external catastrophes, e.g. large asteroid collision. Of course, it also hedges against man-made catastrophes.

Eventually the sun will start to expand and consume the inner planets, so at some point we better figure out how to colonize another planet, or we're done. Don't be so short sighted

Even moving the Earth further from the sun is probably easier than terraforming Mars. Though I agree with Elon that making human life multi-planitary is a good idea.

We've borrowed an amazing place from our kids; It took ~4.7B years to make it this perfect; We need to stop destroying it.

This will happen in 5 million years. In fact the Sun is right in the middle of its life. Think that it's too early to worry about this matter.

Agree 100%. Thought it was Millions not Billions. Better Billions. It means that the Earth has even more life available than I thought.

So the article talks about ways to move the Earth instead of leaving it, but in the end there is no tech to support the ideas. But right now, SpaceX is closer with it's tech to getting us on our way than these ideas, so..........multi-planet living it is!

Interesting article though. Thanks for sharing!

Hmmm... sorry... didn't read that through enough; The physics is pretty straight forward... you nudge a large asteroid or comet into a near-earth orbit and you basically gravitationally 'steal' it's orbital energy to push the earth into a higher and higher orbit. It would take thousands of years but we've got MILLIONS so it's more than feasible.

Here's another article...

oh no, it's all good. I wasn't shooting your article down, the article itself said that there was no tech available.....I'll check out the other link soon.

Surely it would fix the Global Warming issue, no? Move to a more distant orbit, reduce solar irradiance, lower temperature. How far would you have to move the Earth's orbit to say reduce mean temperature by 2 degrees? Can't be all that far - Mars is absolutely freezing!

If also the Earth would be moved to another orbit, lowering the temperature, the Ocean Acidification caused by the high levels of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, wouldn't be solved. On the contrary such an issue would be worsened because the lower temperature would give the feeling that we can continue to emit CO2. Then the Ocean Acidification issue could alone destroy the Earth.

Please stop kidding on this subject!

Changing Earths orbit is a solution to escaping the suns natural life cycle... not humanities stupidity. AGW represents a threat on the order of ~100 years. It would take thousands of years to alter Earths orbit sufficiently to have a noticeable impact.

Altering Earths obit can't help us in the short term... only carbon-free energy can do that.

Agree. So let's focus on the matter of carbon free energy. Everybody should make efforts in this direction.
