Clearly we need both. I do think Bill has a point. If you are planting trees to offset carbon then you should probably plant 5x the number that will offset your usage in the first 10 years.

I hope the reason is NOT that they have run out of forest to cut down. Sort of /s. Sort of not.
It is important to get the right mix of actions...
Solar can be put in some locations which are not good places to have trees. e.g. Rooftops, Car parks... deserts.
On the other hand, we have good locations where trees should be planted, including in many urban environments and some areas on farms.
(1) trees offset carbon, so buy more wood/paper product to incentivize growing more trees
(2) most carbon capture is going to be sea based and will happen without us. Temps and CO2 go up, so does sea or wetland flora.
(3) The earth survived for 5 billion years and brought down CO2 levels from 15x what we have today. And every lbs of fossil fuels we burn is just returning the CO2 that was once in the atmosphere, back into the atmosphere. Where it fertilizes plants, and makes us greener.
