Seems like the energy density per unit weight in the roadster is higher than what will be in the Model 3 or for that matter what is in the 100D? Anyone know any of specs?
It could be higher energy density. Just upping the upper limit for voltage increases pack energy capacity. It'll hurt longevity, but that doesn't matter for a demo car.
My guess is that the Roadster 2.0 pack will have to be at least 2x the volumetric energy density of the current 100kWh S/X packs. Twice the capacity and in a smaller vehicle. Leads me to believe that Tesla is looking to use a battery technology that is not yet in mass production.
Current guesses in the Roadster forum is that they used a double stack of battery packs. The low bucket seats sort of hides the fact that the floorpan seemed elevated.
One of the advantages of Tesla's staged construction of the Gigifactory, should a new battery technology get past scaling problems to production levels, Tesla can build the new line with the new technology. One possibility is Li-S batteries, another Aluminum-Air.
