Email from Fremont about the upgrade:
Hello Daniel,
Thank you for contacting Tesla Vehicle Support.
This upgrade only applies to vehicle produced after June 19, 2017. I apologize for any inconvenience.
For me it sounds like pure bull****. I have read about demo cars produced in February delivered to customer in July that has the new performance. With a VIN no. below 190xxz. I think Tesla really needs to clarify this one's for all. My car is produced late April and delivered June 28. I don't seem to have the new performance (haven't clocked it yet) but I have the 85kwh (btx8) battery and the old DU. Location sweden.
I also got the August newsletter yesterday stating the same as posted earlier in this thread. It makes me a bit confused and at the same time frustrated. It definitely feels like it's a pure software thing and we are getting mixed signals from Tesla.
The strange thing is that my friend has VIN 195xxx S75D, delivery 29. June -17 and have no performance upgrade. But my car 196xxx S75D was scheduled delivery same day , 29. June -17 , but had some small transportation damages , so the delivery was delayed until 31. July -17.
My car has the performance update , the high capacity charger, but it also has the 85 KW battery
I think I was just lucky , bevause my car has 85 KW battery regards to the performance upgrade. The charger is only SW so that was easy for Tesla.
If my car didn`t have the 85 KW battery , and was delivered late , I wonder what they had to do to give me the performance update, probably then they would had to "unqorked" it.....
Maybe it’s like Tesla Firmware. It will trickle out and you’ll get it by the time the next one is sent.Me Neither
I'd really appreciate if Tesla would just provide a straight answer for this. No more back and forth and no more confusion across teams and departments. We know the performance update is just coincidental to and doesn't require the performance update, and we know that the VINs are assigned on ordering rather than production, but here is some interesting data on the new drive unit:
A few minutes ago there were 140 S75D cars in current US inventory, of which 87 have the new drive unit.
There are 48 S VINs in inventory without the new drive unit within the range of 188857 to 201188.
The lowest S VIN in current inventory with the new drive unit installed is 201189. The lowest S VIN in archived inventory is 197054.
The highest S VIN in current inventory without the new drive unit is 201287.
There are 79 VINs in current inventory starting 202448 and higher with the new drive unit.
Here is what the gap looks like:

@HankLloydRight does this look correct? I can't currently check all archived S75D listings (to do a compare with the DU00 archives)

So confirmed that it doesn't require the new drive unit? Makes you wonder if there is a longevity factor though. We know the performance update is just coincidental to and doesn't require the new drive unit, and we know that the VINs are assigned on ordering rather than production, but here is some interesting data on the new drive unit:

For what it's worth, I was at a Tesla showroom earlier today and they showed me the internal page for a 75D with VIN 192XXX that was tagged as uncorked. I was surprised because the VIN was so early.
I asked Tesla for the production date on that car and they said "mid April, 2017"
Here's the car:
Model S 75D 5YJSA1E23HF192355 | Tesla
And the options:
Tesla Model S Options Decoder
Amazing find. This car has the old drive unit and was produced two months before the 19 July date. Tesla uncorked it so that they can resell it as a higher performance model. Just like rsan's in Australia. Only this is one of the first seen in the US. Anyone interpret this differently?I asked Tesla for the production date on that car and they said "mid April, 2017"

Aren't VINs assigned before production? For what it's worth, I was at a Tesla showroom earlier today and they showed me the internal page for a 75D with VIN 192XXX that was tagged as uncorked. I was surprised because the VIN was so early.
