    New 2021 Model S Unveiled January 27, 2021

For that steering wheel to work, there must be a speed dependent dynamic steering/turn ratio. So the steering wheel never turns that much.

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

These are solved technical problems though that won't take their programmers long to implement. Just let the car grab the public keys for associated apps from Tesla's servers with 7 days expiration every day, and it will know how to authenticate your phone without internet as long as car has...

Rotate the tires with one jack?

Nah, this is no problem. The chassis is stiff and can handle it.

V11 is going to be HUGE!

As a software development leader, I would think FSD software on HW3 without self-driving enabled is a more efficient path for Tesla. Use the exact same software no matter what features you have, and just toggle them based on what the user has paid for. In this way all HW3 users will get the same...

Waymo Says Its Self-Driving Tech Is More Advanced Than Tesla FSD, Others

Given a good architecture, the driving policy rules should be defined at such a high level that it should be testable without real life testing. Manual testing is extremely slow and unrepeatable, and will inhibit development speed a lot. The automated testing kit should be fully decoupled from...

Waymo Says Its Self-Driving Tech Is More Advanced Than Tesla FSD, Others

Having the most advanced FSD system is actually a bad thing though. A simpler system is always better than more complex systems, providing it solves the same tasks. A better phrased question is, which FSD solves most problems and is most reliable?
  8. C

Is 2020.44.10.1 the last version before rewrite FSD?

Not necessarily related to time. FSD has been a separate branch for a long time, being independent of the released master branch. Occasionally they merge master into other branches like FSD to bring it up to date, and minimizing the amount of merge conflicts by resolving them along the way...

FSD rewrite will go out on Oct 20 to limited beta

There are significant costs involved with training in datacentres such as Azure. Not on small scale, but Tesla has a huge dataset, big network and rapid/continuous iterations. Seems Tesla wants a reinforcing feedback loop where the training data/labeling maintains itself based on real world...

FSD rewrite will go out on Oct 20 to limited beta

But it's a start, and a much welcome update. As long as there are good leaps at regular intervals, they're good for now.

FSD rewrite will go out on Oct 20 to limited beta

The update we see now is hopefully the beginning of a ketchup effect. It usually happens in software when you do an architecture revamp that a lot of things down the road depend on. Until you eventually hit the local maximum of the new architecture. So far, so good.
  12. C

FSD rewrite will go out on Oct 20 to limited beta

Cases are usually added as they occur in production. Which means the test suite covers more edge scenarios the longer it's tested in production, regardless if you're on codebase 1, 2 or 3. Hopefully every Nth thousand test scenario reproduced in simulation eventually add another 9 to the...

FSD rewrite will go out on Oct 20 to limited beta

This is true, however as you probably know 75% of modern software development is about testing frameworks, writing test scenarios and collecting/labeling test data. The actual code is only 25% of the work. Done correctly you can do fairly substantial rewrites, and validate it against your...

Blog Musk Touts ‘Quantum Leap” in Full Self-Driving Performance

Really? The thread title says otherwise. They might succeed, or they might not, or they might deploy it to a few cars in a geofenced area to check of the "System deployed"- milestone for the investors. A date that far ahead suggests it's a goal, or an aspirational target date. It's pretty much...

Blog Musk Touts ‘Quantum Leap” in Full Self-Driving Performance

Self-driving is still an arena where no products have really materialized on the market yet. Obviously because it's really hard (especially from 99% to 100%), but the rewards are insane. Just consider robo-taxis replacing every taxi driver and delivery truck in the world, Amazon automatically...

Safety Recall? Backup Camera Randomly Stop Working

People should stop exaggerating so much, when did missing a backup camera become a safety issue? Also turning around 180 degrees in the seat for backing up looks just stupid, every driving school teaches their students to use the 3 mirrors for backing up for a reason. Anyway, Tesla will replace...
  17. C

    2020.36

Yes, however the interfaces around it is implemented by standard code. NN's as of now only do some very specific tasks that are hard to code manually, and most of the driving policy is still standard code (unless something has significantly changed after the latest rewrite). For some changes it...

    2020.36

This is standard practice in DevOps. We do it too at work whenever we have large rewrites/changes of modules. We look at all the changes done, then look for bits and pieces that can be moved up to earlier releases. This will "eat up" lines of code and untested code from the big change. We try...

Another reason why Tesla is miles off full self driving

You have the wrong approach to the software problem, doing it like that is a really bad idea. What you want is let the software figure out whether the area is flat/drivable or not, and map that area in memory. You don't need to be able to recognize every single object possible, but you need to...

Blog Musk Touts ‘Quantum Leap” in Full Self-Driving Performance

Yeah, I sorta based my FSD purchase in 2017 on that 2016 video. It looked great, shouldn't be that far from release... or!

With Full Self Driving, How Will Four-Way Stops be Handled?

Pretty simple. If another car drives, you stop. If nobody drives, start driving after a random time delay. If someone else starts driving at the same time as you, go back to #1. Ignore any hand signals, they don't matter.

Blog Musk Touts ‘Quantum Leap” in Full Self-Driving Performance

Until we have more than 1 company with self-driving cars that work all the time in perfect weather, we can pretty much ignore the weather conditions. Unfortunately Tesla's do not drive themselves even in perfect weather yet. Waymo does one thing right by focusing their efforts in an area with...

    2020.32.2

We will probably never see that feature unfortunately. It's a safety hazard to close a window unattended, because a kid *could* have his neck in there, and no sensors would detect it.

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

What's wrong with Tesla owners? Under what other circumstances is it normal to go to the store and get refund for a previous purchase, because the store reduced the price? Tesla has never refunded before, and will not refund this time either.

Navigate on Autopilot is Useless (2018.42.3)

They can probably apply their old test suite with data to the new software, and avoid to re-introduce old issues. Atleast issues that they have test-cases for.

German Court Bans Tesla from Advertising Autopilot

Most people are not saying Elon or Tesla is a fraud. However they do a lot of misleading marketing. They should be better at communicating the actual features today, not what Elon thinks will happen in 1 year. They don't need to oversell the product, it's good enough by itself...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I'm in at 1475 yesterday. It's a nice pullback from the highs we're in now, and it's holding the 1500 level really good despite low volume yesterday. Feeling there's a bigger chance it will bounce to new highs than dropping back.
  32. C

German Court Bans Tesla from Advertising Autopilot

No, any misleading information communicated by Tesla directed at customers counts as misleading marketing. It is illegal in most of Europe.
  33. C

German Court Bans Tesla from Advertising Autopilot

No ads on the TV or magazines, but the contents of the webpage, the banners on the walls in the shops or the foils in their store count as ads/marketing by the law. Never seen an ad about Clean Diesel in Norway. It would most certainly be stopped if someone tried. I don't know about Germany...

German Court Bans Tesla from Advertising Autopilot

I think the German court is pretty much right, the same would happen in Norway if someone brought it up. It's not the Autopilot term itself that is the problem, it's the context of the ads as a whole. When your ads mention "Autopilot" and "hardware capable of fully autonomous drive", it does...

Kinda ruins the "tank" aspect of the vehicle by having a weak hood though.

I think the German court is pretty much right, the same would happen in Norway. It's not the Autopilot term itself that is the problem, it's the context of the ads as a whole. When your ads mention "Autopilot" and "hardware capable of fully autonomous drive", it does set high expectations. You...

Any updates on Plaid Model S?

Yes, but that also applies to braking. No matter what technology you have: Braking, acceleration, regen and turning will always be limited to your available traction. Familiar physics most drivers. With good nordic snow tyres you will get good traction on icy roads though.

The state of FSD by end of 2020

I'm not sure what to believe. Elon did confirm that FSD would likely be feature complete by 2019, but it's very obvious that FSD would never work with the 2D image reconditioning that we have now. Elon probably knows very little of the actual state of development... Just to make it clear...
  39. C

Any updates on Plaid Model S?

Absolutely, I've said the same. Braking resistance for motors is not a new technology. It's used everywhere in the industry for inverter-driven motors connected to things with a large inertia. Could be used on a Tesla to dump the energy when you cannot charge the battery for various reasons, to...
  40. C

will S Plaid offer LR version...?

Depends if they keep the old induction motors, or go for the newer motors. You can't really torque sleep the new motors used on Model 3 without a mechanic clutch (which would add complexity and parts with wear).

    v2020.24.6 update killed my X

Probably not all. I think you need some kind of Plus- insurance to have free out-of-warranty towing. Mine includes that and 30 day rental.
  42. C

    v2020.24.6 update killed my X

Inside the garage with the charger plugged in is the only place I do updates. Most practical. Thinking that my car is within warranty, and that getting the car to SC and fix it is Tesla's problem, not mine. If it was out of warranty, it would be insurance company's problem, not mine. :)

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

To be more specific, AP1 cars can never get dashcam or sentry because they lack the cameras. The only camera on AP1 systems is connected directly to a proprietary MobileEye chip, and the Tesla computers does not have access to the video feed.

Ghost Braking Danger on Cruise Control

Pro tip: Hit the gas pedal. You shouldn't let it drop that far. On the other hand, it sucks, I know. My car slammed the brake 6 times in just 30 minute drive just the other day. Gotta pay attention all the time to override it. Hope they fix it with their new 3D labeling in a coming update.

    Evasive action - FSD only?

I've also seen it treating traffic cones as lane markings, and steering away from them when I drive sometimes. Other times I've had to take over because it was about to hit them. I've never seen autosteer doing anything drastic, and I kinda doubt it can do so given the reliability of emergency...

    Evasive action - FSD only?

I really doubt FSD or autopilot did these evasive manoeuvers. I bet the collision warning went off and the driver manoeuvred. Tesla autopilot can't even drive 30 km without several phantom brakes because it thought it saw stuff. It still drives through stationary objects on the road. I doubt it...

Navigate on Autopilot is Useless (2018.42.3)

In Norway it's pretty terrible at some locations. Last trip it phantom braked hard for me atleast 6 times on a 30 minute trip. You gotta constantly be ready to throttle out of it. Also it's terrible at picking lanes. Map data must be very wrong, it constantly "switches lane to reach...

Will Cybertruck be the first car to use Starlink for connectivity?

It's not implied that Starlink is cheaper than cellular network. Even when made by SpaceX. Costs are fixed independent of users, and will probably be reasonable priced only for users with not many other options (rural areas), and after competition in each served country. SpaceX need a lot of...

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

I think that's an American phenomenon. In Europe, or atleast in Norway, you always get 5 years on repairs that are normally supposed to last for more than 2 years. Such as engine controllers, gearboxes etc... including MCU. It's the consumer protection laws designed to avoid the market swarming...
  50. C

Will Cybertruck be the first car to use Starlink for connectivity?

Tunnels and overhead structures will be a problem. Normally there's LTE or atleast 3G in tunnels independent of carrier because it's a standardized transmission. Starlink is a proprietary transmission and requires a direct view of the satellite. With 4G and 5G capable of 10/100 mbit on normal...
