TL;DR if you think Elon has some brilliant master plan, you need to get out more. This sentiment is exactly equal to the 4 other Senior engineers I know personally who spent anywhere from 10 months to 12 years at Tesla.

Ethan Heald, public post on LinkedIn:

"[Edit: I have recieved more than a few texts from people supporting my sentiment but not commenting publicly out of fear of professional retaliation. Really goes to show how unhealthy of a work environment they’ve created, and underlines the importance of speaking out if you are in a position to do so.]

My heart goes out to my former coworkers affected by the #TeslaLayoffs.

~20,000 employees have lost their jobs with no warning; many are here in the US on a work visa or are new parents that will lose their family’s health insurance. Meanwhile, Musk asks the shareholders for a $56,000,000,000 stock package.

I had a wild, fun, stressful, and mind-boggling four years at Tesla. I watched the company morph from a California-based electric car and solar panel start-up, owned by an innovative genius, to a Texas-based manufacturing and robotics conglomerate, (set to displace thousands of jobs) owned by right-wing internet troll.

While I am incredibly thankful to my immediate team for the opportunity and wealth of knowledge they provided me, I will not miss that job. The company is (from what I could gather as a low-level engineer) horrendously mismanaged at the top. Elon is a petty tyrant and constantly keeps everyone understaffed. He would do things like have the Lucky Charms removed from the coffee bar if we had a down quarter. The company was worth around $1,000,000,000,000 at the time.

Elon’s heel turn was especially hard to watch, because to me, he and Tesla were once such a source of inspiration and hope. The initial shenanigans could be brushed off as funny quirks. The breaking point for me was when he canceled merit awards on the same work day he spent live-streaming the “migrant crisis” at the southern border on Twitter.

I have come to accept this reality, but I still regularly see people in denial.

• The stock is down 30% YTD, down 44% from peak, on his watch.

• Cybertruck was misguided from its conception. No doubt it is a step forward for automotive aesthetic design, but it doesn’t work when the guy presenting it makes a fool of himself publicly on a daily basis.

• Over-promising wildly on CT specs and FSD timelines. Sending company wide emails that served no purpose other than to leak and pump the stock.

• Removing parking sensors prematurely. I did not meet single person inside or outside the company that thought this was a good idea.

• Buying an unrelated company and devoting the work day to fix that blunder at the expense of Tesla operations and reputation

• Many other baffling decisions that made me question what the point of an executive team and board is if they are going to just let him do whatever he wants. I understand self-preservation but at a certain point it’s just spineless.

While the board recommends voting to give him $56B and re-elect his brother and Roman Roy as directors, I recommend against it. He is the only person that deserved to be laid off."
Sorry for him but based on his LinkedIn overview crapping on a company on exit he will never get another quality position at Any of the other automakers. Who would ever hire someone that burns the field on exit. He can say how important he is on LinkedIn pitching to be hired but his world just ended.

He may or may not but it certainly lends credence to his words when he places himself at considerable career peril in stating them.
Not that he said anything that isn't obvious about Musk with even the most casual observation, but 3rd party verification is nice to read.

More importantly, it’s up over 13 THOUSAND percent on his watch.

The stock went WAY TOO HIGH the first time. Nothing, not even “hopes and dreams” supported that price at that time. That has skewed the numbers dramatically.

As far as the rest of the market being up 25%, take out the top 6 companies holding it up (because of AI) and the view is MUCH different. Much of it hasn’t even recovered from 2022. Can see that in the Russell 2000 index.

If anyone who voted yes the first time on the 55B contract and now votes no, your word is not your bond. Even doubly egregious if you profited from it. True, the optics of layoffs are not great but that ultimately doesn’t matter. If Elon tanks the stock, his options will be worth less as well.

The CT is a slow ramp but making progress. That was more than made clear a while ago by Elon that would be the case.

If the management of any other auto maker had sense they would hire him. Someone like this can prevent problems with new product launches that others in a company are afraid to speak up about.

I prefer the Mother Nature natural look.

Motortrend gets different results when dragging a 911 with a CT towing a 911.

Yup. Tesla/Elon shouldn’t have said the qtr mile and instead stuck with the 1/8. Just gives the haters fuel to point to that while they ignore how impressive the CT actually is even if it does “lose” to the Porsche in that scenario. Even Motortrend admitted that in their video. But I’m sure the press will not repeat that.

Just saw a CT in person for the first time today at the Tesla showroom and sat in it. I like it even better after seeing it in person. That thing is awesome. I will be curious to see how it drives with the A puller blind spots and long dash. The parking lot had at least 20 CT’s just delivered and are all sold.

I think they picked the wrong car. It might have been true in older generations of 911, but they have since improved. When Motortrend pulled a similar stunt with the Model X, they picked a Alfa Romeo 4C.

Didn't someone already disprove it with math and Tesla admitted they didn't run 1/4 mile?
Yes someone did do a video on it and if you see the video Tesla posted actual you can see it's not the quarter mile, but rather the 1/8 mile of you look a bit more closely.

My point was more that the results were close enough (for example Motortrend got 0.2s) that perhaps the CT might have beat a 911 if it was an older model.

1. Elon said it was 1/4 mile.
2. Even a 2019 Carrera (not T or S) runs a 12.6, which is still faster.

I think the point is that the CT towing a 911 is not faster than a 911 in the 1/4 mile, but we already knew this.

Right which was incorrect, but the video showed a 1/8 and Tesla's engineer later also said the same (that it was 1/8 not 1/4) when asked about it.

That's still current gen 992, probably a previous gen 991 would be a better match:
For example the 2012 Carrera 4 coupe/cabrio gets 12.7 which matches the CT with the trailer (and weigh about 100 lbs less also, which helps a bit)
I think the point is that the CT towing a 911 is not faster than a 911 in the 1/4 mile, but we already knew this.
Make no mistake, it's all a stunt where they try to get the closest car they can get, but my point is they miscalculated and picked one that was just barely out of reach, instead of one they just barely can beat.
