This is the first of two posts that provides information about EV adoption in WA State as of end of December 2023. Both posts use the data provided by Washington State Department of Licensing, which is updated monthly.

In this post, 'Electric Vehicle Population Data' is analyzed, which lists both Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) registered in WA as of end 2023. The second post will use new title transaction data, which better allows adoption trends to be determined, together with comparison of EVs to ICE and hybrid vehicle sales.

Question: How many BEVs and PHEVs are currently registered in WA state?
Answer
:
  • Total Number of BEVs: 130,055 (78%)
  • Total Number of PHEVs: 36,385 (22%)

Question: For BEVs, which Make has the most registered vehicles?
Answer
:
  • Tesla leads the way by a large margin, followed by Nissan, with Chevy in third.
  • Tesla’s make up 57% of all registered BEVs.

Question: What are the most popular BEVs for the 2023/2024 model year?
Answer:

  • Tesla - 55% of BEVs were Tesla, and there are almost 10 times the number of Tesla’s than Chevy, which is in second place. I believe Chevy is going to drop in 2024 as the current version of the Bolt has now been discontinued and their new EVs are slow to appear.
  • There are 24,954 Tesla’s for the 23/24 model year, with Chevy next at 2,602, and Hyundai third with 2,487.
  • The Tesla Model Y is the most popular by far, followed by the Tesla Model 3, then VW ID4. There are 8.5 times more MY’s than ID4’s with 2023/2024 model year.
  • I would expect the Ioniq 5 to climb this list in 2024, due to a $7,500 discount being offered by Hyundai and dealer discounts, which makes the price comparable to MY. With the ID4 has losing its tax credit, I would expect sales to slow, unless VM starts to offer big discounts.
  • Rivian R1S sales must have been good!

Question: What are the most popular PHEVs for the 2023/2024 model year?
Answer:

  • Jeep, with the Jeep Wrangler! Not as many Toyotas as I expected!
