Warning! New Brake Pads and Discs after 13,000 miles

You do have to watch Tesla (and probably every garage with way high service fees) recommending stuff as an easy earner. I've had tesla do a brake check/service the last two years but next year I think it's going locally where they'll let me do a visual while they clean and check stuff. It was an extra £200 for an alignment check the first year when i foolishly asked Tesla to give it a good look-over. Local garage reckon they charge under £25 for an alignment check - three times that and a bottle of scotch to make sure they don't skimp with the laser checks is still cheaper. So far they've only fixed punctures but they're happy for me to put it on/off their lift and check jack mode etc and have a good look at the underside.....
You're comparing the cost of an alignment check with the cost of a full alignment there, but I do agree an independent will still be able to do an alignment much cheaper than a SC will charge.

Yes, I asked why would a EV with regenerative braking need new brakes at such a low mileage. He just responded that it was only a recommendation and didn't have to be done.
You should have asked what was actually wrong with the existing brakes or asked for photos of the pads and rotors.
Once the work has been done and they've given you the old parts it would be too late to dispute, so there's no point in doing that.
Once again, a good independant garage is the way to go for this sort of work if you feel they still need attention.

I will ask them on Monday when they call to get payment for the brake clean.

We picked up the car from sales this morning as it was ready too late yesterday.

I didn't let them replace the brake pads and discs, it would be half that price elsewhere if they needed done.

There was nothing wrong with the brakes as far as I was concerned, no strange noises, feel or anything.

Got stung by Tesla few weeks ago. Went in for a known problem with front squeaking suspension. Got a phone call the to say 3 out of 4 wheels were buckled and were too dangerous to put back on the car. I was surprised as had no issues but was convinced safety issue and so gave the go-ahead. I asked for the old alloys back (which they were quite shocked about) and took them to an independent alloy wheel specialist.

struggled to find any damage to one other than kerb rash. The other two had very slight dints to the inner rim which the specialist said was absolutely of no consequence and they wouldn’t even bother fixing.

I now have paint peeling off the rear sill which no doubt will be my fault for using the wrong type of water/shampoo to wash my car with.

Great car but worst SC I have come across.

I hope you have contacted the service centre to advise them of this outcome. There's every possibility that they have a rogue employee in the repairs team ... who was perhaps planning to sell the discarded "damaged" wheels ..

Spoke to the service centre today when I paid the bill.

Asked what the issue was with the brakes.

They said that when they took off the pads and discs to clean them they could see that they were worn so "suggested" replacing them. But it was only a suggestion.

Seemed very vague to me. I would hope they don't need replacing in the next 12 months before the car goes back.

Typical Tesla. Brakes are supposed to wear, so I would expect they were worn to some extent. The question is by how much? They should be telling you what proportion of useable life they still have left on the pads and the thickness of the discs versus the minimum recommended.

Hope they pointed out the tyres were 'worn' too!

Another one for a comment on the Tesla after service survey... What SC was it by the way?

At least you said no though and didn't get stung. tbh, the brake clean was probably quite a reasonable price considering the Tesla SC hourly rate.

What SC was it by the way

It was Edinburgh. They are normally very good and didn't push it.

Just before I sold my RR Sport I had the same discussion with the dealer re brakes. They were a bit more specific about when they would need replaced. I tried to make them last until I sold it, but ended up having to replace them. I had it done at an independent for less than half the main dealer price.
