Did Tesla design cars to be able to take a range extender just incase?

I have a solution if you wanted to cut out the big heavy battery for storage… Even works as a replacement to motor boats. Totally free energy for propulsion. Might even be able to adapt it for flight, although not strictly wind powered.

    Supercharger team sacked?

Apparently not. A recent comparison /test of several Chinese solutions, including by people well versed in autonomy solutions with no bias, apparently showed that the Chinese versions were far more capable than Teslas offering. And tbh, EV efficiency isn’t really a useful benchmark as long as...

I’m not fussed about missing out on new functionality with OTA as tbh, it’s never happened to any of my other cars and potential 15 years or more later, It’s performed as well as the day that I first too delivery. But unlike my other cars, where all the delivered features were finished and...

    Supercharger team sacked?

What bit do the Chinese need Tesla for? I suspect his recent trip to China (after pissing off India by cancelling them, possibly a decision he will be regretting) will have opened his eyes about how far Tesla are behind the Chinese wrt EV and self driving. His trip coincided with Beijing motor...

Spare parts availability - 4 months and still no delivery date?

With ICE cars, nicking catalytic converters seem to be a common thing to make a few bob. On a Tesla, a few bumper clips would soon be worth more than a whole car.

    Boot opening

Car does not have fuses that blow and need replacing/manually resetting. They self reset and have had long enough to do that.

    Good bye

Good luck with your new car. Nice to have something different. We had ordered an EV6 until second hand market normalised and couldn’t justify the cost to change. So sticking with our legacy Tesla that still only does 90% of what we ordered nearly 5 years to the day when Tesla was a very...

Arrive with minimum % battery - Navigation

What happens if you are navigating to a destination which, like OP, estimates 7% arrival but nearest supercharger is 30 miles away. How did that work? Also, is it still using ‘as the bird flies’ distances when calculating distances to superchargers? Long time since I checked. My nearest...

Wiki Everything you wanted to know about Intelligent Octopus But Were Afraid To Ask

I see this but attribute it to BMS calibration (ie not sitting at a stable % for the appropriate amount of time) and method used to determine current range (reads % as an integer so can be ~3 miles out depending on where charge stopped) rather than any physical degradation. It soon sorts...

Ok. What I meant was, what value or algorithm does the car use to determine a minimum arrival % before it starts suggesting mitigation strategies, ie charging stops.

Arrive with minimum % battery - Navigation

It’s a feature I have long wished was available- along with the obvious missing/fix for poorly implemented features and a speed limiter, it’s probably with them at the top of the list. Thankfully waypoints help some use cases but not all, but they are a fairly recent addition and Tesla seemed...

    [UK] 2024.8.x

There is a similar situation where, in inner lanes, the car detects a speed sign for the Terminal 5 slip road running parallel with the M25 clockwise at Heathrow. Thankfully our car does not change its speed according to speed signs. But for those cars that do, the M25 is normally running less...

    An interesting journey last night

I would still get Tesla to take a look. It’s likely to be remote diagnostics so won’t be any hastle. And as it sounds like the car is not a keeper, if you get it checked then at least you aren’t passing the buck to the new unwitting owners. Also covers your arse if they have the same fault and...

    Why?? Just Why???

We have a mid engined sports car in the family and recently we had the bonnet up when a policeman came round to make some neighbourhood enquiries/chat. I think he must have seen the electric charge lead and (seriously) asked if we were electrifying it. We politely pointed out that the engine...

    Charging cable with 2023 card

The plastic bag label description looks right. In the nicest possible way, I suspect user error or an equipment failure or the wrong type of charge point, maybe non type 2 socket. I would be surprised if Tesla supplied a standard part that was labelled seemingly correctly on package but wrong...

Autonomous, as per SAE definition, is Level 3, 4, 5 The big difference between L3 and L4, is that L3 requires a legal driver to be at the wheel (and be in a position to take over in a controlled manner when vehicle leaves its ODD, maybe speed limit or type of road), where as L4 (or L5) does not...

    Charging cable with 2023 card

The package label looks right but the labels on each plug looks to be the same part number. Each plug (type 2) should be nearly identical, but one end will be for car and the other for charge point. So, are the labels on the plug for the plug, or for the cable. That’s the $6M question. If...

Our Model 3 MCU ‘car computer’ failed in a similar way, although we got no on screen message as we only have a single screen and no aux drivers screen. I don’t know what runs that drivers screen, ie is it independent of the MCU. Various parts of the car worked, but with no screen and having...

    MG Cyberster concept EV roadster

It’s a convertible, it’s never going to be as efficient as you will get with a hard top. But 400 mile city range is not too shabby. I’ve done 120+ in a convertible, it’s top speed is plenty. Lots of things to like - including many features not on a Tesla. But it’s a completely different type...

    Replacement Wing Mirror Glass

You can just ask for the cost of the parts in the app as well as cost of fitting. You can find exact part numbers in the online electronic parts catalog (epc.tesla.com) for your car. Otherwise something like mirror glass they would hopefully just go on your description. Sounds like you have...

It was a Model 3 but was missing a few bits. Based on purchase price and what Tesla delivered, ours could be thought of as a Model 2.7 because its missing 10% of the functionality, by cost, that we paid for.

London company to fix window scratches?

I had a big long scratch on inside of windscreen from factory. Tesla first suggested that I try and polish it out, before they tried and ultimately replaced the windscreen. We had to use public charging for first few months - trust me, the novelty of making a special trip to charge the car soon wears off. One key card stopped working

Several people have made RFID rings by dissolving the key card and forming the internal chip and antenna into working ring. That’s far more severe than a surface scuff. Typical Tesla BS excuse. Thankfully they are cheap and trivial to self program but that’s not the point.

Is that right? I thought it was 3 months, hence I haven’t been back for them to re-do what they supposedly fixed* under warranty in September. * I don’t actually think they fixed the original cause of the fault (seems to be a common cable issue caused during build of a part that was never...

You can actually get tow bars that will only fit certain bike racks. I don’t know how common these are but it will limit bike rack that can be fitted. Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

Sounds like it’s limited at 16A. If you have DNO permission to output more than 16A, then hopefully it’s a setting in the inverter. Worth checking the fuse size for the inverter circuit. If it’s 16 or 20A, then likely the 16A limit is for a reason, ie that’s the limit of the circuit.

New owner here. Got a question…

Just be aware that pre conditioning when plugged in is not cheap as it’s likely to be peak rate electricity and potentially higher carbon than an off peak charge, especially something like an Octopus IO charge that may have been optimised for carbon. Tbh, we dont bother pre conditioning unless...

    [UK] Spring Software Update

So where does it get its tiles when you are in an underground car park with no connectivity? Its a rhetorical question. It use to allow significant panning of the map, but I don’t think it’s as far reaching as it was. Ie map data is probably cached but not so much now.
  39. MrBadger

    [UK] Spring Software Update

It use to be silky smooth, so clearly not a CPU constraint. Just a hunch, but I suspect things have got a bit more bloated so it’s got less memory to play with so cannot cache as much. It was once very rare to see it waiting to load a map tile.

    [UK] Spring Software Update

Historically, Tesla have a track record of releasing on latest hardware first then implementing on legacy hardware later if capable (or they have the will or desire). Just because it’s not being released on MCU2 now does not mean it’s not capable to be. It just means that it’s been implemented...

Don’t be hung up about south facing. That may best for peak power, but east/west may potentially give peak energy. And this time of year, even north facing becomes an option.

    How Secure Are Teslas/Tesla Thefts

Any numbers for ‘thefts from’? There was quite a spate of cases in US where rear quarter light panel was being broken and contents of boot accessed. It wouldn’t surprise me if Tesla release new features to current hardware now, but filter down many to older hardware later. How Secure Are Teslas/Tesla Thefts

When we got our model 3 in 2019, with mass collections and regular pickup day ‘training presentation’ groups, pretty much the first thing Tesla said to each group was to turn on pin to drive. I suspect P2D use is very widespread, especially for those who had a basic handover.
