Tesla will open its security code to other car manufacturers

Tesla might just get into the habit of releasing source code for its in-car tech. Elon Musk has signaled his intention to post the source code for Tesla's car security software, letting any automaker roll it into their own machines. It would be "extremely important" to ensure the safety of future self-driving cars, he argued, and that's not without merit. You really don't want intruders crashing your car or otherwise causing havoc, especially when you're not at the wheel.

The title of this thread (and the tweet) are very confusing. What is meant by "security software?" We are talking about a system here: multiple processors communicating on multiple networks (various CANs, ethernet, wifi, bluetooth). In order for the system to be secure, each component must be built to a system-wide specification using best security practices. Security is therefore "built in" to the code, as opposed to "bolted on." If he is speaking about one particular software package (perhaps a firewall or IDS), why would he not just call that out?

As usual,a tweet doesn't allow room for details but I am thinking that security software deals with access to the car systems and software updates.
