Would be interesting to know whether there was a vote amongst FCAI members on which Options to support, and where everyone sat.

It would be very interesting to know that. Although in my experience that’s not how industry bodies work. They don’t (or shouldn’t) take votes or simply reflect the view of the majority.

In my experience, industry bodies operate by consensus. On a given topic, if all the members agree on something, that becomes the public position. But if there is not consensus on any particular matter, or some detail around it, the industry body should stay silent on that particular matter or detail.

So it would be fascinating to know what happened behind closed doors at the FCAI meetings…

An interesting tidbit buried right down the bottom of this article:

The FCAI hasn’t just upset some of its members with its stand. The federal government is also said to be planning to take over the chamber’s role of producing new-vehicle sales figures (known as VFACTS), removing one of its major revenue sources.

Access to those sales numbers is a major reason many auto companies are members of the FCAI.

Well that is very interesting. Arguably, this is important public data that is needed for a whole variety of public policy and planning purposes. And all the States and Territories operate Motor Registries where such data is already in public hands in varying degrees of granularity, timeliness, and public accessibility (NSW wins hands-down in that regard).

So it should be a relatively small step for it to become nationally available, free of charge. OK, new vehicle registrations are not identically equal to sales, but it’s a damn close proxy.

Else, the Government could compel all car manufacturers to provide the data to them monthly as a condition of them holding a vehicle importers or traders licence.

Some hints that VW might be next to walk

"VW said it was concerned about the exit of both companies and was discussing the situation, the spokesperson said, without giving specifics."

New Zealand does it this way, and one benefit is that grey-import vehicles are also included. It can make quite a difference with certain models, e.g.

Apparently its too Toyota dominated. And unfortunately for them, they haven't been able to get their EV strategy together. In fact none of the Japanese players have been able to mass produce one so far. Their Hydrogen strategy has failed as well, hybrids are the only things which are selling but it's a 18 months - 2 years wait currently!

Unless the Japanese government steps in to help them financially to re-tool their business, it will be extremely difficult for Toyota to dig themselves out of this hole. And then it's not just them - there will be others wanting the same handout - Nissan, Suzuki, Honda, Mazda... It's Kodak / Nokia all over again IMHO... funnily enough, the #1, #2, #3 voted cars of the year in Japan are all Chinese made EVs :D...
