Tesla model 3 accident with a Mack truck

As mentioned earlier, it's probably best to leave the legal side of things out of this discussion... The whole thread kind of went in a different direction than I thought it would go... It'd be nice to try to keep the discussion on how the car performed during the accident

Yes, wow. A bit surprising (and alarming) on where this one went. The car seems to have held up like a champ and again glad you're wife is ok.

The ambulance had a police escort. This wasn't a nursing home run.

I'll say one thing that someone said before, but it hasn't been said nearly enough -- what's the dumptruck doing cruising along in the left lane for blocks? That's the #1 issue in this accident, that along with the dump truck following too close. Any behaviour on the part of the guys wife is secondary to these two facts. I hate ****in trucks driving in the left lane.

What was she doing cruising along in the left lane for blocks?

Regardless of the truck, she shouldn't have slammed on the brakes trying to stop like that. The ambulance had a red light, and they were stopped, waiting for traffic to clear like they should have. Not sure how you canucks do it but here in the states an ambulance doesn't have free reign just because lights are on, they have to ensure that traffic is clear and stopped before running lights and I always come to a stop on red. As such, your wife shouldn't have put herself and others in danger slamming on the breaks for a green light, if she missed the ambulance then she goes through her green light and the ambulance can wait at their red for traffic to stop.

Yeah, I don't know if I would have stopped if I had that truck looming in my rear view mirror. Unless I was oblivious to what was in my rear view mirror... wink wink.

Judging by the video, the truck driver was distracted by the ambulance and was trying to clear the intersection as quickly as possible. Assuming that people in front of him would have the same idea. If anything, it looks like he accelerated.

You're really not adding to the thread here and just being adversarial.

He definitely is, but at the same time American rules of the road can be very different, depending on the state. In some states there's no such thing as "keep right except to pass". And I'm not speaking just of the laws on the books, but as common courtesy. Some states have no problems with a guy cruising the speed limit in the left lane with 20 cars behind him for miles. California is very similar to our rules, certain other states... not so much...

If it was loaded, then it was in violation by not having a covered load.
As for stopping distance:
Impact:

Full stop (it is practically stopped earlier, but still rolling slightly).

Class B dump truck axle length is 20 feet. The cross street appears to be 2 lanes in each direction slightly divided. So call it 50 feet max. Therefore, the truck stopped in less than 50 feet, or about two truck lengths from impact.

I had missed it the first few times, but the was a vehicle in the right most lane that also stopped for the ambulance (showing situational awareness),so swerving (which was meant as an indication of reacting to the impending collision, not that dump truck slalom) was a good thing not to do.

Not covering the load is hardly unusual.

Did you consider the impact with a stationary object may have reduced the trucks forward momentum?

Notice in the picture post impact the trucks wheels are all distorted. Could have ruptured the radiator or may have smoked his brakes and tires trying to stop.

All I’m saying is none of us where there and this pseudo science is just silly. She created a dangerous situation with a very sudden and unnecessary reaction but not at all an unexpected one. My wife would have done the same thing, I would not have. No one is disputing the truck driver is legally at fault. I just wonder if all you experts would have done any better. Maybe two human beings reacted exactly like your average person and had an accident.

Avoiding cars entering and turning off the road.
It's a surface street, not a limited access highway. ( I tried to find any laws regarding keep right on cit street and failed)

Again, you're an American speaking to a point you really don't understand. Americans should refrain from speaking on this topic, as they've really no idea what they're talking about. All the major entrance roads to the GTA have road signs stating "keep right except to pass". And there's a very understood rule (not sure if it's written or just highly understood as I don't have my truckers license), that this rule applies x20 to trucks. They simply do not drive in the left lane except to pass or turn left.

Again, an American speaking without knowing what they're talking about. Uncovered loads are illegal in Ontario

If we are going there, the same question could be asked about the dump truck driver ;)

Did any of you even read what made bold in the quote? If you had you'd realize why I made the comment. Here it is again in case you missed it.

Not sure how the laws are in Ontario but I travel in Alberta, Edmonton area usually.

I never said it wasn’t an infraction, I said it’s not unusual. Last time I checked I’m Canadian residing in Canada with a profile clearly indicating that.

Forgive me for not checking your profile, never heard of Cloverdale being referred to as an area, just a mall. :p

Then I'll disagree with you on its prevalence. I'm sure you've seen those green and white MTO pickup trucks on the 400 series freeways over the past couple years? Their one and only job is to pull trucks over for safety violations, and they do it all day, every day. You see as many of them as you do cops, if not more. That program was funded by the Ontario govt as a response to the rash of tires flying off trucks we experienced a few years back. Any dump trucks with an unsecure load will find their tickets piling up super fast.

Thank you, and thanks to everyone for their well wishes to my wife.

Another thing I hope people take out of this, if you haven't already, to set up a USB drive for the dash cam feature... It only takes a couple of minutes to set up on a PC, and is a lot more stable now than the early days of the feature...I remember when it was first released, the usb drive would stop recording cause it would get corrupted for whatever reason, but it seems like Tesla fixed that.
