Is it required? No, certainly not. You'd be able to manage without it. Is it worth the money? I tend to think so.

We ordered it on the X because it really didn't make a big difference in price and my hands get cold really easily and I love the heated steering wheel even though I will probably only use it a few times a year. Nice to have the seat heaters in the back in case passengers get cold.
And it doesn't even get really cold here...

If you are on the fence, get it if you can. You won't regret it.
