If you need absolutely 0 torque, slip into N. I used to do that if I started slipping in a manual transmission car;

Yes I have been doing that on slippery roads. It's just not that easy if your car starts going sideways on a freeway and your hands are very busy on the steering wheel trying to keep the car on the road. I've been in that situation a few times and I simply don't have nerves of steel to take my hand off the wheel and gently push the stalk half way down to get the car in N. :)
