So I had previously asked everyone a month ago when I first put my money down to lease a 2018 Model 3 Performance with white interior and about 2100 miles on it for about $12K off MSRP, if I got a good deal (ignoring the arguement about lease or own). Well, I finally took delivery about 10 days ago (and also posted about my odd delivery experience, as someone loaded a porn website on the browser and my delivery rep was shocked when we all saw it during her walkthrough of the vehichle....my 12 year old was in the back seat).
First, before I say anything. Holy cow I love driving and owning this car. Its been great, reliable and really fun to drive. Plus, no gas and clean(er) energy!
Now back to the story....well, things have gotten even more odd. Over the last day I have been receiving calls from someone at Tesla coporate. I was finally able to call her back and this is what happened....she explained to me that they were auditing the paperwork from last weeks deliveries and realized that they sold/leased me a car that was listed as new on the paperwork but had been previously titled to someone else. She explained that they need to take the car back from me and place an order for a new one. She said that they would place an order for a new 2019 with the same configuration but it would take at least 2 weeks to get to me. Due to these issues, they would honor the $12K MSRP discount off a brand new 2019 in the same configuration, plus give me a Model S P85D until my new car is in. They just need me to bring the car back ASAP.
I was/am somewhat speechless. First, this is scary, as I guess this is the issues Wall Street is concerned about with Tesla. The ability to deliver cars is a bottleneck. They must be taking a loss at getting me in this car plus all of the additional costs associated with logistics. I am honestly happy with my current car and do not really feel they owe me a brand new car for the same price. However, I am not going to say no. I really hope that Tesla figures out the backend logistics and is able to become profitable because I feel like Tesla is really producing great vehicles and doing a lot to push the industry into sustainable energy. I have purchased a lot of cars over my years and can honestly say this entire experience has been strange.....mostly postive but very strange (purchasing the car is a different experience).
In any event, anyone on the fence about purchasing a Tesla should not be scared, as they are no worse then any of the large auto manufacturers and truly are making great vehicles.
