Octopus GO beware!

My Octopus Go Tariff was a right challenge... felt like I was at the Casino at one point. Place your bets please.

My original Octopus Go Tariff ran from 29th May 2021 to May 2022 and the rates were 5p / 13.72p / 25p Standing Charge.

People towards the end of last year were saying they were rolling over onto their old 5p Tariff rates... so I had hope things would be good.

Then around beginning of January 2022 the Octopus Go rates jumped to 7.5p / 30.78p / 25.08p Standing Charge.

But some people were still rolling over on the 5p rates, appeared to be glitches of some sorts?... and again, I thought things looked good.

Then in February I started seeing mixed reports of people not rolling over onto the 5p rates, but instead only being offered the 7.5p / 30p / 25p Standing Charge. Which spooked me to be honest.

My big concern was Winter 2023 pricing, as my old Tariff expired end of May 2022 and whatever it renewed at would carry me through Winter until May 2023. Summer rates aren't an issue because of Solar Generation.

I spoke to Octopus about my dilemma and they couldn't advise... but I got a feeling something was about to change again... I also moaned a bit about our 3 Phase Meter taking longer than expected to reconnect.

Anyways, I decided not to wait until May 2022 to see what happens, I decided to jump early and secure the new 7.5p / 30p / 25p Standing Charge until March 2023... sacrificing the last couple of months on my old 5p Tariff (as it mattered little because Solar is coming online).

Octopus Agreed to do it, and here's the weird thing... they then credited me back all of this years electricity payments, about £280 worth... so that's now set me up for the rest of the year.

... and I suspected right... the Octopus Go rates jumped up again 3 days later to 7.5p / 35p / 47.86p Standing Charge

Still don't know if I shot myself in the foot by jumping early and not letting it 'glitch' onto my old 5p rates... but I didn't want to risk it. At least the Credits compensated me short term... see what happens now in March 2023

... and now Solar Generation is coming online it's only the off-peak Rate I'm interested in

I could happily weather the increase in energy prices but the standing charge… where is that increase justified? That’s like buying a pint of milk and the bottle alone costs two quid!

To use the same analogy, within the milk bottle, you're paying for other farmers who went bust, and for socialised discount for the other people who get a discount on their milk

It’s paying for the suppliers that went bust, amongst other things.

Agreed, it's paying for the Customers the surviving Energy Companies had to take on (at a significant loss), from the ones that went Bust.

I also think in part, it's to maintain revenue from those people who choose to 'scale back' and not use as much energy.

As we understand things, go is fixed whereas go faster is due to be fixed by June

So does that mean I would've been moved onto the 7.5p / 35p / 47.86p Standing Charge - Go Tariff Version in May 2022

That would've upset me for sure...

As has happened to others even lately, go faster is still rolling over for another 12 months on previous rates. The trick is to do nothing. Go isn't using the old rates anymore, so standard go will have gone up significantly.

My fixed term of 5p ends this week... I'll update the thread as to whether it rolls over for another year!

I'd appreciate that... see what happens...

I'd also be curious to your yearly electric consumption... to see if they roll over low power users... but upgrade high power users to the new Tariff...

Just to see if there are any patterns?
