A bit confused as to how the Model Y is rated higher than the Model 3?

It seems to come down to the estimated cost of electricity for 14000 km of driving given the manufacturer’s published battery capacity and rated consumption. I’m not entirely confident that this is a terribly good metric.

Isnt it all a bit academic? The source of power when charging dictates the operational environmental credentials of any ev. The most inneficient ev charged from solar is superior to the most efficient ev charged from a fossil generator.

Quite right. They do give a range of CO2/km from 0 to 220g/km and a typical value.
