One question we had is, do we really need to buy a CHAdeMO adapter here in Japan? Do any others here live without them?

That depends on where you want to drive. Check the Tesla website for superchargers where you’re going. Also, having a J1772 adapter will get you filled up overnight if your hotel/destination has charging. Other options are the CHAdeMO adapter and the mobile connector. I live in Kyushu and own all adapters and connectors. YMMV.
