Wow they are onto it. My wife just asked their facebook page and got this (she's a scallopoholic, poor thing):

Wow, that is quick!

A bit of backstory - Strahan Village, Cradle Mountain Hotel and Freycinet Lodge are all owned by RACT (our equivalent to RAC's in other states). So clearly they have a motoring interest as well. RACT is a corporate member of AEVA. I was told last year that the other two were getting chargers, but the electricity supply in Strahan wasn't sufficient to allow it.

A few weeks ago I noticed a comment (again, on Facebook) of someone saying that he was installing 3 Tesla destination chargers in the coming weeks. Thought it might have been these but haven't heard anything since. Note the Bruny Island one was installed by a different company.

Another location on the west coast that has expressed interest - the Paragon Theatre in Queenstown. Not sure on the progress of that one though. Charles Gregory - Hi The Paragon Theatre, I hear you are... | Facebook

Apparently accommodation at MONA Pavilions ranges from $600 per night upwards.

Ok, I imagine that would put it out of my budget. More importantly, looking at their website it looks like they get sold out well in advance. Which probably isn't really surprising for this type of accommodation.

I see there is RACV/RACT Hobart Apartment Hotel which has a single J1772. Would be good for charging overnight. Anybody had any experiences here? Would make me somewhat nervous relying on a single connector however if there is another Tesla staying at the same time, we could be clashing.

Possibly the best approach would be to detour via the Highland Cabins Bronte Park supercharger - maybe stay overnight. Assuming you can do a full charge hereu, that would give more margin when arriving at Hobart as opposed to going direct from Devonport. In fact it, looks like it should be possible to do Bronte Park to Hobart and return on a single charge.

Alternatively there's Longford Showgrounds near Launceston which is 3 phase 32A & House of Anvers at Latrobe which is 3 phase 16A.

Longford doesn't seem to be on Plugshare?

J1772 would be fine overnight...unless it is a slow 15A type...which I have experienced with a Destination charger.

Not super I don't think :) It isn't clear on Plugshare what they are, hopefully 3p/32A like at the Adventure Bay Store. I definitely want to go to both.

No it isn't...I thought it was but evidently Daemon charged up there...also in Launceston using 3 phase from the parking meters...looks like you need a long cable.

It's probably worth checking first. The hotel has a Nissan Leaf which they hire out to guests. I expect this charger would be primarily for that vehicle but enquiring does no harm.

Be warned, unless you are actually specifically travelling this direction, it is one hell of a detour! The road from Devonport via Deloraine, Launceston, Campbell Town, Oatlands, to Hobart is the National Highway, is mostly straight, mostly flat with a few small hills, and a significant percentage of it is four lane. The road from Deloraine to Miena, to Bronte Park, to Tarraleah, to Ouse, to New Norfolk is windy, hilly, often has poor road markings and in some cases a gravel road. It is very scenic but it is nowhere near as easy to drive as the the Bass/Midland Highway.

Strahan and Cradle Mountain pretty much completes the set.

Just to confirm, I mentioned this to a MS owner here. He is going to contact RACT and confirm everything. Obviously the RACT FB page is official, but they aren't mentioned anywhere else, on the Tesla website map, on the individual hotel FB pages or websites, etc. and he would like to know the full story before driving there (he runs a chauffeured car business so won't be staying overnight!)

Tried contacting them via email, so far got no response.

Am inclined to think that January may not be the best time to do a trip like this. I am attending a conference in Hobart (16th to 20th January). I note there are only three public chargers in Hobart, and I think I would need a charger when I first I arrive and then before I leave to ensure I could make the return trip to Devonport.
  1. Hobart Central Carpark - J1772 - only available 8am to 6:30pm *weekdays* - and a reasonable walk to Wrest Point. Probably not really a good option.
  2. RACV/RACT Hobart Apartment Hotel - J1772 - assuming it is available - could have high demand at that time of year by other EV owners.
  3. MONA - 32 amps HPWC - don't think I can relying on them multiple times during my stay. I can probably justify visiting MONA once, not multiple times. Plus staying at MONA seems to be not-an-option (both due to price reasons and too late to make a booking).
As a result, flying in might be a better option; at least until I get a better feel for taking the Tesla on longer trips. I want to sell people the concept of driving a Tesla, having my photo in the media as the 2nd person to get stranded would not be a good look.

Am I being too pessimistic here?

From memory all parking at Wrest Point is valet, but it's possible they have a 10A outlet in their car park. Worth contacting them and seeing if you can charge up during the day while you're there?

From a previous message in this thread:

Wrest Point Casino in particular has a large 2-3 level car park and should have a few 10A plugs around the place.

So 10A not much, but should be fine for the number of hours I will be there. Even more so if I end up getting accomodation at Wrest Point (which is likely).

My understanding is they have "plenty of free parking" - quote from their website Wrest Point Tasmania | Entertainment in Hobart (actually this page doesn't load for me, that text is in the google cache).

I will try to contact Wrest Point, the challenge I imagine will be speaking to the right person who actually knows the answers.

In other words we can't be bothered....

Exactly what I thought. Crap response from one of Tasmania's premier hospitality organisations.

This is the car park, and the multi level section is three levels. I'm sure there is a power point there (although I haven't looked).

In any case, @Brian May - I think you're in luck. I shared your predicament on a local EV group and a fellow Tesla owner said they can help you out. They are overseas at the moment but back in a couple of weeks. Are you able to PM me with your email address?

To be fair, I think the casino is their core business, and I won't be making use of that facility. I already gambled a lot of money by paying a USA based car manufacturer <grin>, not going to spend even more money gambling when I *know* the odds are against me. The flashing lights just don't work on me. Even if they are electric lights, powered by renewable energy in Tasmania.

Thanks. I have done this.
