Model S Delivery Issues and Communication Concerns

I'd rather they get cars out than update a website telling owners who have their cars that they have their cars.

I think we all would, but it seems like the person who updates the web site is unlikely to be intimately involved in getting the car built and delivered. They could probably hire a HS kid at minimum wage to keep the web site updated.

It's not about updating the website, it's about tracking hundreds of cars (and thousands of reservations!) moving through multiple stages of production.

If the local pizza delivery franchise is able to get their minimum wage staff to accurately track the order I placed, you'd think an automated factory could have scanners reading a barcode off the sleds as they move around the factory. When it gets to the end of the line, build is over and inspection / delivery takes over on updating the status.

Then again, I have a suspicion that the pizza order tracking system may just randomly spit out times and names to placate the hungry folks waiting for their order to be delivered!

10 minute process with very few components and handling max 10-20 orders at a time vs multi-month (week?) process with thousands of components and thousands of impatient customers.

+1

I think it was alluded to that we would get something like this online. I just think, like online configurations, it won't be ready for some of the first ones to receive their cars. It would be cool, yes, but I think I'd rather they focus on getting cars out for now.

Am I paying Elon to inspect my Model S?

On my MVPA there's a line for: "Final inspection, prep, and coordination" that costs me $180. Is this me paying Elon to inspect my car?

If not, then why am I paying someone whom Elon distrusts so much that he feels he needs to inspect my car himself?

I'm pretty sure Elon isn't the only person inspecting these cars. He's also said that he's ramping down the number he looks at personally at this point. I imagine he's looking at more of a high-level view when it comes to his inspections. I would expect the person/team actually doing the inspections is looking at it according to spec and determining if it passes on that basis. Elon is looking for things beyond the spec, since he has the power to change them.

More likely he's sampling - doing a very thorough review on a smaller number of vehicles. That's how you catch problems.

If you do find a problem in one vehicle you check all of the cars you currently have for the same flaw, and more importantly you trace back to figure out how it happened in the first place.

I emailed my Delivery Experience Specialist yesterday and heard the following today:

"I was just informed by our management last night that the delivery windows have been shifted 1 to 2 weeks later, so I would expect that your car to be ready toward the end of October or early November.

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news. We know it is frustrating as you anxiously await your car. Please know that we are working around the clock to bring you a car that will blow you away. As we ramp up, it’s very important that every car we produce is quality tested and a product that we will stand behind; just a week or two more allows us to ensure that. "

I had been given a delivery window of October 7-21 for Sig 731 (Sig Red, Perf, Lacewood, Pano roof, Child seats). While it's disappointing to hear about the delay, I appreciated his prompt response and his directness.
