Is there an interface for homebrew devices?

I've seen devices out there that connect to the ECU and let you show car status and control it as well. I can't seem to find any documentation on what ever protocol they use, and the API doesn't seem to be designed for individual car control, with unusable per car limits.

Figured I'd ask here before giving up. I could have sworn there was a way to do this

Try looking at the S3XY buttons from enhauto.com or Abstract Ocean...
Also Obdlink MX+ with Scan My Tesla software has options...

I use them(both) and they work well for me.
