Many times in my life I have seen people walking along the side of the road with a gas can in their hand...

Happened to me once. Wasn't fun. I usually top off whenever my range gets below about 100 miles now.

I've never heard of someone losing sleep over almost needing a tow...

Anyhoo... I think the author is a candidate for having more than one car, or at least renting something for longer trips.

Shoot, I can buy a 1st Gen Honda Insight (65+mpg), 2nd Gen Prius (45+mpg), 90s Toyota pickup, and an i-miev for about what I'd pay for a new sedan... And have a ton of utility, really low fuel costs, and plenty of extra vehicles to loan to friends.
