Wait! There's also Chesapeak Charlie

I know that during hydraulic fracturing (fracking) there is a liquid pumped down into the well bore which is pressured. I also know that all of the fracking is precisely controlled, at least here in Texas. They have recently placed portable seismic equipment in a neighborhood where my friend lives. The size of the array is more like 1 mile by 1 mile. This array is used to detect when the fracturing occurs and the location in which it occurs. These are used to precisely pinpoint when they need to stop. The holes are also cased off from the aquifers so that no contaminants gets into them.

If there is contaminants in one of the aquifers, someone screwed up. Probably the wireline operator who is responsible for perforating the casing to permit the flow of gas and other fluids. (or he got his tool stuck in the hole, no pun intended) Another way in which some wells have been getting contaminants into their bores is the casing rusting which is far too common.

In most cases in which someone has had their land drilled without their knowledge is when they don't own the mineral rights. Thats why we buy the mineral rights along with the land, and I would highly advise anyone with potential usable, minable, drillable materials under your house or land to buy the minerals. (you get a nice fat royalty check if they are ever mined or drilled)

Yup, people screw up all the time, that's the problem. They spill fluid, retention ponds fail, fracking has been tied to increasing earthquake activity, even proper fracking has forced methane into aquifers and ruined drinking water. There seems to be a high potential for mayhem with current fracking techniques.

Pretty sure around here, NYS, you own the mineral rights when you buy the property. That's why the gas company landmen come around trying to get people to sign leases. Even if you don't sign the lease you will still get royalties if they do extract from under your property from adjacent land.

Quite true. Especially if you have a hurried crew working on it.

Not here. You have to buy the minerals when you buy the property or go to city hall and look up the owner before you buy or have your lawyer/real estate agent do it.

You own the right to use the land, but not to extract minerals from it. Unfortunately, that also means that whoever owns the mineral rights also has the right to use the surface in the process of extracting the minerals that they own. As you can imagine, this leads to some very tense situations when these surface uses conflict.

What is it about? By developing new technologies it is possible for several years, has not been usable in unconventional gas reserves reach. Underground areas to be traversed by several square kilometers with horizontal drilling. Million liters of water with a ton of them highly toxic chemicals are then pressed under high pressure into the ground. For a short time then the gas can be promoted until the process must be repeated. What happened there? The holes run over several months. Thousands of truck trips are necessary. Biocides, carcinogenic and mutagenic substances are delivered in large quantities. This leads to accidents. During drilling and subsequent Fracking artificial pathways in the land are put in place, but also by the methane contained in the soil substances such as radium-226, mercury or arsenic are associated with groundwater. Fracking after and during the fall promotion million liters of industrial water and reservoir water, which must be disposed of. They are ... read more
