Hi,

Wanted to take a brief moment and share a very sad experience we are going through with our 1.5 month old Model X LR in the hopes to raise awareness for others and for folks to add this to their delivery checklist. The perforated seats and prone to rips and holes!

When we picked up our car - a MX LR Ultra Red with Cream interior, we did a thorough inspection as we have done with our previous MY LR, and everything was in good order. Panel gaps looked pretty good, noting that we are not super picky like the folks posting pictures with rulers or whatever. We did an interior inspection, and compared to our MY, things looked great. Perforated seats with COOLING! We did notice that there was a haze on the windshield, and not knowing much about it we headed out. That is a different story about the car not properly being detailed (Ior not detailed at all?) before it was handed off to us.

Fast forward 1.5 months and this past Friday, 12/15 my spouse noticed that when she was getting in the car (she is the driver BTW) that there was a "hole" in the seat. Take a look below:

Here is a Zoomed in shot for those looking for more detail:

To say that we were shocked is an understatement. Seeing as my spouse does not wear anything sharp, like heeled boots, or anything with buckles, etc. and given the fact that this is on the front edge of the seat this is clearly a manufacturing issue.

Ok then, we thought - let's go open a service request and get it fixed under warranty. Kind of sad thing to do on an otherwise great car (save for one thing, if you are reading this you already know Vision sucks).

The first shock was when we got an appointment - for January 17, 2024! What the hell? I guess the sales blitz is backing everything up? Or they are down technicians? OR BOTH?

We drove down to the Raleigh / Glenwood SC today as they "wanted to see the damage first" and one of their technicians spoke to the Service Manager before coming out to look at the issue. He informed us that this is not a warranty item, as only "rips along the seams" are covered! WHAT? Our only option would be to replace the seat cushion area at our own expense. We were surprised an understandably annoyed. The tech said that's all he could do, and would send an estimate later this afternoon.

See below for a screenshot of the work required for that little manufacturing defect.

So to wrap this little novella up, for those of you that made it this far this is a word of caution. PLEASE PLEASE inspect your seats closely and check them for strain marks or just look them over closely. Something is going on with these new perforated seats and they prone to rips and holes.

I hope this helps someone out there. Meanwhile, we are getting a driver's seat replaced on our own dime.

Pretty sad, honestly. Thanks for reading.

It’s not clear from the picture what part of the seat we are looking at. It’s possible this area was damaged in the factory and it took a few rubs with the leg or clothing on entry or exit to detach it and you missed it on examination. Are you sure you just didn’t miss it during pick up and examination?

The problem with warranty repair is that if Tesla covers this then every seat rip or damage should be warrantied and I guarantee you this will back up service centers even more and escalate costs.

Also this looks repairable but you need to have an experienced mobile repair specialist which is not the case in every area. Search your area - this can be made to disappear including reproducing the perforations for less than half the cost of full cushion replacement.

Edit: this looks not unlike the tear in this video. Your wife could have inadvertently snagged the area with something metal like a zipper or hand bag ornament. At any rate - just repair it. Should not cost more than a fraction of replacing.

Had seen a video from an “influencer” about these repairs and complaint on durability of new model X seat. It featured a the professional mobile repair. Keep in mind in 2-3 years you’d have other wear so a small tear repair will not bother you at all even if you know hot to find it (like filled rock chips on paint)
