Do most dealers know how to do this? I purchased an all electric from Carvana last November and I have regular passenger plates.

I will be purchasing an electric vehicle from a Fiat dealership soon, in Chicago. Not a Fiat, obviously. Any suggestions to make sure they complete the correct procedure to register it as electric so I can get my 'EL' plates? Thanks

Ask them for the EL plates. They won't do it automatically because it's more work for them. But they should know how to get it. If not, then refer them here.

I see too many EVs running around with non-EL plates - most likely lease, but I don't understand how the dealerships don't use the registration cost as a selling point. Oh right, they don't really want to sell EVs.

They should give you a temp plate (one of those yellow paper ones). If they give you a regular plate, most likely they just gave you lip service.

I know most dealerships now give you a actual metal plate when you purchase a vehicle from them. Does Tesla give out EV plate at delivery in Illinois or just a yellow temp plate?

I got paper temp. plate, for a CPO Model S.
Still waiting on my EL plates, 1 month now.

I think they do it automatically for new plates, but maybe send them an email.

Tesla HP will do it automatically. You'll get the EL plates in about a month.

Didn’t think they assigned in order that’s cool. I had considered that before since I’ve seen plates with 3 digits but most of the ones I’ve seen are in the 4000 - 6000 range.

Tesla will FedEx them to you.

Got them in today in the 10,400 range. Early 400 at that. Plate looks cooler with 4 digits instead of 5. But I was excited.

Guys can someone summarize the cost savings of an EL plate in IL versus the vanity plates? I have a vanity plate I might want to transfer to my new Model 3 AWD LR (delivery 10/10/18, reservation 7/21/17). Thanks!

Here are EL fees--bascially $35 for 2 years.

Random-Number Electric Vehicle License Plates

• Newly acquired vehicle/first-time issuance - $130 ($95 title fee + $35* registration fee for 2 years)
• Currently titled vehicle/first-time issuance - $35 ($35* registration fee for 2 years)
• Current plates expire within 90 days - $64 ($35* registration fee + $29 replacement fee)
• Current plates do not expire within 90 days - $64 ($35* registration fee +$29 replacement fee)
• Two year renewal - $35

*Two-Year Registration fees as follows:

• January 1 thru June 14of the first year - $35 registration fee
• June 15 thru December 14 of the first year - $27 registration fee
• December 15 thru June 14 of the second year - $18 registration fee
• June 15 thru December 31 of the second year - $9 registration fee
