Buffet, Gates, Bezos, Duponts, Rockerfellow, Soros ... All of US Congress people seem to have 100 Millions each, Obama $ billion and you are worried about Musk ????
Not at all - my point was it is problematic for anyone to have that much money.

Like using his bully pulpit to attack someone helping to rescue children trapped in a flooded tunnel.

Nonsense. This is what continuous lying and gaslighting by media does to naïve ignorant people who drink media cool aid. Media selectively provides what they want you to hear so that you can form a biased opinion.

Musk calling him a pedo is outright wrong and deserves to be condemned for that. But every incident has a background and other triggers that need to be told so that ignorant public can put things in context.

- This guy who the media calls "a hero diver who saved the kids", did NOTHING of that sort. In fact he was nowhere near the cave during the rescue operation. All he did was provide some tips on the cave to the people tasked for the rescue, since he was very familiar with topography of that cave having been there several times. The real heroes are the Thai military that actually rescued the boys.

- Musk was asked to help by Thai authorities, and he assembled a team of SpaceX engineers to come up with a solution. That team made a sub that was to be used only if all else fails and the cave is fully flooded. The probability that the Sub will do its job is not certain, but it was supposed to be last ditch effort.

- When the 'media hero' was interviewed by CNN international, he was very abrasive and curtly dismissed the sub made by SpaceX team with a comment, "Let Musk shove his sub up his ass". Totally uncalled for.

Musk angrily reacted to that comment and the media's portrayal that Musk was a fraud and a showman. Media never gives the full story and context. Because they are rear end orifices. And you fell for it.

Given the decline in Tesla share price, I suspect the headline figure for his net worth seen in the press has taken a hit.

But let's tax unrealised gains as proposed by some members of Congress...

In the case of Musk (and Bezos) the key issue is that they take out loans against the value of shares.
I'd (and others) argue that any use of share value as a financial instrument should be treated as realizing the gains.

Moderator comment: I'm letting this run as its good sometimes to get it all out in the open, and its in Musks spirit of freedom of speech (and I say Musk as I watched every episode of House and the American way seemed to be to refer to each other by their surname).

Please just keep it away from personal attacks on other members of the forum as I will have to do something then if it goes too far.

Don’t see that kind of tax having any legs. It would kill off investment in the US. The stock market would suffer so much.
I have doubts it would ever be adopted as well, but the cynic in me thinks it's because a huge number of Congress-critters have substantial unrealised gains in stocks and real estate so it is not in their own interest. Makes for good "tax the rich" rhetoric however.

But does it give me the right to call him a “pedo guy”, for example? 🤷‍♂️
IANAL but typically rights that are protected by something like a constitution are bounded by the law. As such if calling someone a pedo is considered defamation or libel then I think you don't have the right to say it. Same for hate speech, conspiracy etc.

Analogous to this, in the US they have the right to bear arms yet there are some types that are not allowed by law. You wouldn't say that you have the right to carry those.

But a loan is not a gain. Using shares as collateral is a risk to the lender but doesn't enrich the borrower. If the loan provides gains then those gains are taxed.

I did not know that. I had been tricked by the media into thinking the divers who actually rescued the kids were a group of specialist amateur cave divers from around the world supported by the Thai military. So thanks for setting that straight for me. I feel such a fool.

There’s a documentary about the rescue, I think it’s on Disney+. It was a mixed team, but the Thai military had no experience of diving in caves (albeit experts at diving elsewhere) and it was the international specialists who had the cave diving expertise, it was international doctors who worked out the drugs required to stop the boys panicking while ensuring the breathing was maintained during the extraction (from what I read it is much easier said than done). The Thai military provided manpower. As for the guy musk took offence with, he wasn’t fit to dive, but his knowledge of the caves meant they were actually found. Musk tried, he made a torpedo (unfortunately it was inflexible and too heavy to get round the bends so a non starter, but he tried), but what got people annoyed was he turned up with a camera crew to film him.

It rather does, actually.
What it doesn’t give you is impunity from the consequences of doing so.

Freedom of speech and the right to freedom of expression applies to ideas of all kinds including those that may be deeply offensive. But it comes with responsibilities and it can be legitimately restricted. And restrictions can also be justified if they protect specific public interest or the rights and reputations of others.

Free speech is one of our most important rights and one of the most misunderstood. Use your freedom of speech to speak out for those that are denied theirs. But use it responsibly: it is a powerful thing. I don’t think the vicarious pleasure people get from ‘Elon bashing’ necessarily count as freedom of speech and it is a shame the moderators allowing this thread to continue.

I propose that they make it illegal or a enforce a good old penalty to take out a loan against their shares. Penalties are decided by the people for the people.

The penalty if they did take out a loan would be based on what they make/provide. A new Tesla or cash equivalent for each person that already owned one (Musk) Free stuff for a year (Bezos) Stock portfolio (Buffet) and so on.

Yes that was the corporate mainstream media outlet that tricked me as well. Can't believe you fell for it too!

How do you feel about home equity loans?
