Climate Change / Global Warming Discussion

I read this book when it came out in 2015 and it really opened my eyes:

This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate
Sorry but I disagree. Let's face the Climate Change issue as a purely scientific problem.
But yes I agree that the Private Sector has not to be in charge of the Climate Change issue which must be ruled by COP and if necessary by the UN Security Council.

Breaking News!

The latest available data from Copernicus (from Feb. 17) just put the planet 1.55°C (Global Temperature Deviation) above the pre-industrial baseline for the last full year (365-day running mean), while one month ago such a value was 1.52°C.

We are overtaking the threshold of 1.5°C set by the Agreement of Paris more and more.

Former Secretary of State and now Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry calls the Climate Change issue a weapon of mass destruction.
More from Kerry on the politics

Political leaders must be guided by the science of the climate crisis and reject the calls for delay, he said. “We have politics now entering into this – fighting for delay and fighting for progress. They’re procrastinating and they’re part of the disinformation crowd that are willing to put the whole world at risk for whatever political motivations may be behind their choices here,” Kerry told the Guardian in an interview in London.

The populist backlash against net zero around the world is imperilling the fight against climate breakdown and must be countered urgently or we face planetary destruction “beyond comprehension”, the US climate chief, John Kerry, has warned. He hit out at the rise of “disinformation” and “demagoguery” which he said were damaging the transition away from fossil fuels, and being used as tactics by special interests to delay action. “People are not being told the truth about what the impacts are from making this transition [to net zero greenhouse gas emissions],” he said. “They’re being scared, purposely frightened by the demagoguery that is oblivious to the facts or distorting the facts. And in some cases outright lying is going on.”

Climate change is political but it’s “not the imaginary politics of universal consensus,” he writes in the book’s pithy prologue, nor the “anti-politics of miraculous technological salvation”. It’s also “not the end of the world”. Instead, it’s a struggle between “actually existing people over actually existing crises with actually existing differences, interests, and prospects. Climate change is about power.” Politicians in the global north rarely talk this way. They think of climate as an “on/off switch”. “‘We’re doing some climate’”, says Chaudhary, mimicking them, “‘would you prefer we do nothing?’”. But there are two large clusters of “doing something”, both of which Chaudhary examines. The first is what he calls “rightwing climate realism”. This encompasses a “broad spectrum”, from those who favour “slower climate mitigation and adaptation” to climate barbarism, but it’s ultimately about concentrating, preserving and enhancing existing political and economic power. That is why Chaudhary is insistent that, when we think of climate policies, we must pay attention to plans for borders and policing, too.

We all understand the science and we have the solutions.
Politics is the problem.
Sorry but I disagree. If we try to work out a scientific issue like the Climate Change issue with political solutions we will get real troubles. This matter is well explained by John Kerry in the article of the Guardian mentioned by you.

John Kerry is a political leader but, in spite of this as you can see, he is warning us to prevent politics to enter the Climate Change issue because whatever political motivations can put the whole world at risk.

So IMO let's face the Climate Change issue as a purely scientific problem without any political implication.

So we have a Global Temperature Deviation of about 1.8°C for February 2024.
Made a rapid calculation. This means that while the Global Temperature Deviation for last 12 months was 1.56°C now the Global Temperature Deviation for last 12 months is about 1.61°C!

This is really worrisome. So please don't look up this post.

If we continue to get Global Temperature Deviations of this kind in the following months we will reach a Global Temperature Deviation of about 2°C for last 12 months within this year 2024!

This is SCARY!

Last month was the warmest February on record in England and Wales and the wettest on record in southern England, according to provisional figures from the Met Office.

So we are having first confirmation that February 2024 was warmest February on record.
Think that will get other confirmations about this matter soon.

As I said in the quoted post we are having other confirmations that February 2024 was warmest February on record.

When the final numbers come in over the next few days, February may end up being the warmest month (by anomaly) on record. Stay tuned!

Strangely, it seems Las Vegas is getting colder. Just got my natural gas bill... 30% increase vs last year. I guess we have pretty good EV adoption here and also more EVs coming from Cali that we no longer have a blanket of smog to keep the place warm... smug doesn't seem to have the same effect as smog. :(

Yes you can have these kind of impressions but actually the Global Temperature Deviation is calculated by averaging Temperatures over the whole Area of the Earth and the length of time considered, in this case one month. From a mathematical point of view the Global Temperature Deviation is a Double Integration divided by the Area of the Earth and the length of time considered.
